Agricultural lands are used for industrial or mining or for land filling of Solid Wastes or for dwelling thus causing diminishing agricultural lands available. 2. Labour is becoming scarce and expensive discouraging farmers to grow. 3. Wild Animals, Rats and untimely rains, hurricanes, cyclones etc are damaging agricultural fields and thus reducing total available yields. 4. Pests and insects are becoming more and more pesticide resistant and reducing the yields. 5. Seasonal fluctuations in market prices sometimes lead to heavy losses to the farmers leading to suicides in many developing and under-delveloped countries where agriculture is the main occupation. 6. Younger generations are attracted to more remunerative occupations. 7. Over generations inherited lands got divided and became smaller with lesser cultivable land after volumes of the boundaries are increased. In this context a need arises to solve all these problems. A better proposition is to enable a farmer to use one seed which can yield one crop above the ground and simultaneously another crop under the ground like POMATO which was designed to produce Tomatoes above the ground and Potatoes under the ground; thereby farmer will be having a chance to have a better price atleast to one of them. In this article efforts are made 1. to compile the available technologies 2. to better understand the protocols involved in simpler terms 3. to use improvised versions of the methodologies to augment sustained world food production in the coming Years. | Ashok Kumar | Please give a Thought to Below project. Aromatic Oil Project- RRL-CN-5, Risk Free Agro project. Dr Ashok Shahi, Ex Scientist, RRL Jammu and his team has developed RRL-CN-5 Grass after 8 years of extensive Research & Development, which is Superior to Pamarosa and other Aromatic grasses in terms of Fresh herbage and its Oil quality (Geraniol 65-70% and Geranyl acetate 10-20% ) and Quantity (4 to 6kg per Ton of grass)and is being grown across the India like Jammu, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. It is observed that oil recovery is better in humid and warm climate. The Oil recovery of RRL-CN-5 in Gujarat is around .5 to .6% (5to 6 kg, even 10 kg is also notice per Ton of Grass), hence this crop can be grown very well in Maharashtra and Southern States also. Export Opportunity- The Aromatic oil of RRL-CN-5 is having High Export Potential due to its Geranyle acetate demand in Perfumery World. Net Profit - Upto Rs.80,000 can be generated from one acre yearly, without much risk. Drought tolerance value of this grass is 9% means it can be taken as rain fed crop- 8 to 10 Ton herbage can easily be obtained from two cuttings which can give 30 to 35 kg of Oil which amounts to Rs. 27,000 (Rs.900/kg X 30kg = 27,000) Fly ash- Dr Mohini Saxena, Ex Scientist, RRL Bhopal, has conducted trials of RRL-CN-5 on Fly ash and found increase of Oil content up to 10 to 20 % because of increased micronutrient and water holding capacity of soil. Soil Erosion - By cultivation of this grass soil erosion can be checked, instead of planting Vetiver grass solely for soil erosion this grass can give additional income in the form of Oil (Rs.27,000 per acre per year). Saline Soil/Water- This Grass can also be grown in the wide range of Saline & Alkaline soil & water ( It can tolerate Saline soil up to 8.5 pH and water up to 2500 TDS.) area where other crop can Not Sustain. This Aromatic Oil Project can be implemented in below modes. (1) Fully irrigated area of 12 to 15 acre, at one place or within 5km radius. (2) Semi irrigated (up to March) 20 to 30 acre, at one place or within 5km radius. (3) Rain fed more than 30 acres, at one place or within 5km radius. This project can be Implemented by ATMA through cluster of farmers. (4) On the farms adjoin to forest or having wild animal problems. (5) Un cultivated/Barren lands also can be brought under this Project. How to implement- Raise the Nursery of one acre for further plantation of 12 to 15 acres. Nursery can be raised in Feb-March and Jun-July and re plantation can be done in Jun-July and Sep-October, First option is far better and suitable. (It has to be done under Supervision of consultant) Advantage over Pamarosa- Oil recovery is more (.1 to .2%), re plantation is easy as it is done by Slips which helps maintain Genetic purity, there is no seed formation in this variety. RRL-CN-5 Oil is only the source of Geranyl acetate (15-20%) which is in high demand by industry. Advantage over Citronella- No diseases, herbage is constant as compare to Citronella (Citronella herbage after 2 years drops down), Oil rate is quite high and almost stable. Economics - The fresh herbage (Grass) yield is 20 to 25 Ton per acre per year and the Oil yield is 100 to 125 kg and rate of this oil is Rs.1,000 to Rs.1,200 per kg. Rs.80,000 to Rs.1,25,000 income can be generated from one acre. And expenses are not more than Rs.20 to 25 thousand per acre. Additional advantage of this Project- 1. Plantation once for 5 to 6 years. 2. Only 3 to 4 labor can maintain 15 to 20 acre plot. 3. No risk of Wild and Domestic animal and the theft. 4. No much effect of Heavy or excess or less rains. 5. Money flow every after two month. 6. No Pest and disease. Note- Net profit on 15 acre plot is Rs.50,000 to Rs.80,000 per acre per Year on Average. | Kantharaj V.J. | Hi Kumar, Where are you located ? my advice to you is, not to go for a large flock in one go. You have to start say with 25 female + 1 male and mange them till the first litter, then gradually you can increase, as you would have gained confidence. You have to grow all the feed in your farm itself, buying from outside will not be profitable at all. It is a full time job and so you need dedicated personnel to look after. What about marketing ? have you identified the buyers ? if you sell to the butchers, they will not pay properly, and once you do not supply to them, they will stop their payments due to you, so plan the marketing part well in advance. Goats are in great demand and its not difficult to find market. I further suggest that you go in for Organic farming & within 3 years all the products coming out of your farm will be organic and hence better price.
