Lesser Known underutilized and neglected wild edible fruit species – 1 Alangium salvifolium (Syn. Alangium lamarckii; Family: Alangiaceae) Vernacular names : Sage leaved Alangium ( English ) Ankol ( Gujarati ) Angol, Ankora, Dhera ( Hindi ) Ankola ( Marathi ) Akarkanta, Ankod ( Bengali ) Ankolamu, Udagu ( Telegu ) Alangi, Ankolum ( Tamil ) Ankolam,Velittanti ( Malayalam ) Ankolimara, Ansaroli, Ankol ( Kanada ) Angkola, Dirghakila, Gandhapuspa,Gudhamallika, Gunadhyaka, Guptasneha,Kangarola, Kolaka,Kotara,Kothaka, Vijnyanatailagarbha,Vishalatailagarbha ( Sanskrit ) Dhela ( Santhali ) etc. Distribution : It is native to the Indian subcontinent, the Comoro Islands and eastern tropical Africa. This lesser known , underutilized medicinal plants species a deciduous, thorny, armed or unarmed plant which grows wildly in India described in Vedas, Samhitas and , It is described in Susruta Samhita in vrana chikitsa Ethno Medicinal Use : The bark is commonly used medicinally in India , very bitter in taste . The roots are anthelmintic and purgative The juice is used to expel worms, and to treat conditions such as piles, dropsy, hypertension, diarrhoea, fever, back pain, blood disorders, snake and rat bites, leprosy and other skin diseases . A decoction of the whole plant, combined with the fruit of coconut palm (Cocos nucifera), is used externally for the treatment of boil. The stem is used to cure diarrhoea and vomiting. The leaves are used to cure asthma and as cataplasm to reduce rheumatic pains. The fruit is used as purgative, expectorant, carminative and as an antidote for poisoning. The fruit juice is applied to the eyes to cure eye diseases Pharcutical Medicinal Use : Phytoconstituents in different plant parts : Root- Alkaloids cephaeline, tobulosine, isotobulosine, psychotrine and alangiside. Root Bark- Alkaloids A & B, Alangicine,d-methylpsychotrine, marckine, marckidine, lamarckinine. Leaves- Alkaloids Alangimarkine, Ankorine, Deoxytobulosine alengiside, Sterols and three triterpenoids. Fruits: Alkaloids Cephaeline, N-methylcephaeline, deoxytobulosine and Alangiside. Seed- Alkaloids Alangimarine, Alamanine, Alangimaridine, Emetine, cephaeline, Psychotrine. Other uses : The twigs are used for brushing the teeth A mixture of the mature fruits, combined with honey and the roots of sweet flag (Acorus calamus), is used as a pesticide to manage pests on agricultural crops The result of the nutritional evaluation of the fresh fruit of A. salviifolium, ( Ankola ) indicates that this wild fruits is either superior or have identical status to the popular commercial fruits. It was also observed that, compared to the large sized cultivated fruits, this small minor fruit, even though not much tasty, were more nutritional in term of biologically active substances such as ascorbic acid, tocopherol, and anthocyanin It shows that, consumption of small fruits, which are often referred to as “natural functional products” has been associated with diverse health benefits such as prevention of heart disease, hypertension, certain forms of cancer and other degenerative or age-related diseases This information is also pertinent to help underutilized and neglected species for the well being and better health, nutritional status of the urban well as rural communities .
