drip irrigation is highly successful for larger area and where water is shortage and even fertigation (fertilizer with water), by knowing crop water requirement you can specify timing also .
as for as road side is concerned maintenance is difficult like 50 km and above but smaller the area more successful safeguard of laterals is also a question. best option for road side is tracter irrigation is best.
