We are planting Teak Trees along our Farm Boundary (in Sitapur, UP, near Lucknow) at 12 feet in a row with one Eucalyptus tree between 2 Teak Trees. So we have Teak-Eucalyptus-Teak at 6 feet.

We plan to cut and sell Eucalyptus Trees in 4-7 years and leave Teak trees spaced at 12 feet, to grow and mature.

Is it a good strategy, what precautions do we need to take. Will flood irrigation be OK or do we need to go for drip irrigation. Summers are very hot and dry in that part of the country. How often do we need to water and what kind of manure, fertilizer, pest treatment is needed.

Please advise.

teak & eugaliptus plantations

Dear sir,

You doing the teak 7 eugaliptus cultivation in boundaries.Anyhow you may watering the main crop oftenly. So that you need not go mfor drip irrigation.Mass irrigation/flood irrigation is sufficent upto summer.Afterwards you will irrigate for teak 7 eugaliptus every 15 days.Because the main crop will be harvested in few months. So much ater will be availiable in your bore/well.i dnt know about your existing main crop .whether its a annual or pernial.teak& eugaliptus not required much water .You can manage the water yourself for teak & eugaliptus for all time.

Thank you

Is Eucalyptus suitable?

Eucalyptus sucks a lot of water. There are instances where Eucalyptuses were used for social forestry but it proved a wrong venture as water table went down.

Inter cropping with eucalyptus may need frequent irrigation. Also there is risk of the main crop (teak) having sluggish growth due to water starvation.

Why not try magnum teak inter cropped with tissue cultured teak. Magnum teak can be cut after five years and main teaks after twenty years.

Teak and Eucalyptus bordercropping

Dear Sri Misra
Already there is good suggestion. Water table in Lucknow and Sitapur is not so low. Therefore, fortnightly irrigation will be sufficient to meet the combined need of water of both the species. As for as I know there is no such problem of pest and diseases in planted species. So far as fertilization is concerned, addition of NPK mixture in furrow (that will be there to facilitate irrigation) and mixing in soil can help in faster growth of plants.
Thanks
