Firoz Hassan Khan – returns from Dubai and takes up farming
Posted January 15, 2016 11:57 am by editorialteam
Professional turns into farmer. Also provides consultancy services
“My passion for plants persuaded me to return to my farm fields in Pratapgarh District, Allahabad after working for few years in Gulf countries,” says Mr. Firoz Hassan Khan, an organic farmer and consultant. He started farming in the year 2006. Initially he was doing chemical based farming but later switched to organic farming in 2009 after reading about the harmful effects of chemical farming inputs on living souls and environment.
On his return from Dubai and after few month of practicing farming Mr. Firoz took up B.Sc in Agriculture & Horticulture from Govind Ballabh Pant Agriculture University, Uttarakhand. He says, “As I was working in the fields I understood the subjects in degree course much better. I was able to visualize things clearly as I saw the same on my field.” He grows different crops like cereals, oilseeds, foodgrains, fruits, vegetables on his 21 acres farm. With his experience he developed his own formulations for organic manure. The manure is the mix of organic ingredients like duck dung, cow dung, cow urine, yogurt, gram flour and trichoderma etc. In addition, he also formulated liquid bio-NPK and neem based pesticide for foliar spray in cash crop farming used during vegetative, flowering and fruiting growth stage. These are offered to farmers at reasonable price.

“Farmer and government official actually are unaware of their soil quality and nutrient requirements. They are using the chemical based farming inputs just following the cut, copy and paste formula. This actually is dreadful for them! Once the soil is fed with chemicals then next season it requires same or some percentage increase in chemical else the yield shall drop. Therefore I started assisting farmers with on-field consultancy services,” he describes the reason for providing consultancy service. He specializes in cultivation of red lady papaya (one tree yields 60 kg fruit), G9 banana, icebox water melon, water melon, green house, medicinal plants, teak and animal husbandry.
Unique features of his services are that he gives only on-field consultancy, “I need to inspect the field thoroughly which is then followed by appropriate farming plan,” he says. “Secondly, the country is facing extreme fluctuations in climatic conditions therefore I stress on preventive measures than the remedial actions. Protect the plant from unexpected disease/pest attack and weather fluctuation syndrome thereby the productivity is assured.” Mr. Khan does not charge for his first field visit but his travel expenses need to be borne by the client.

To increase the crop productivity he recommends growing ‘Pistia Stratiotes (called jalkumbhi in Hindi)’ as it is good source for Nitrogen fixation, using pond clay, vermicompost and organic manure. “I train the farmers to prepare the manure on their field itself. The manure is sufficient for enhancing plant growth. Apart from it no other fertilizer is required,” he claims.
Speaking on Uttar Pradesh farming he says, “Our soil is fertile. This season our belt had good production of tomatoes and chilies. It attracted vendors from West Bengal and North Eastern states. Furthermore we also had vendors from Bangladesh and Bhutan. Tomatoes are good in quality and have higher shelf life so it could be transported by road.” Mr. Khan persists farmers of one particular region must grow same crop so that they can have direct buyers on their farm. “It helps to make the belt popular and bring vendor to the farmer. Revenue is better and there is no hazel of mandi visit,” he adds.

Challenges faced are organic produce does not fetch higher returns as there are no special organic bazaar hence farmers are de-motivated. “Also individual certification is expensive. Consequently without organic certification it is difficult for farmers to sell the produce to export companies or e-commerce website,” shares Mr. Khan. Sometimes he also extends help to farmers to sell their farm produce
On a positive note he concludes, “Now many educated professionals are joining agriculture industry. They know how to sell hence to pursue their farming passion and aspiration to earn more they are getting into farming. For example, papaya is in high demand for industrial purpose. Professionals are updated on the new demand and market change. They tap it and are able to earn good money. The trend is changing for good!”
