Dibakar Banerjee returns 20 missed calls to reclaim liberal brigade membership
Controversy erupted yesterday when Khosla ka Ghosla Producer, Savita Raj Hiremath slammed Director Dibakar Banerjee for unilaterally returning what was a joint national award given to the film’s entire cast and crew.
While Twitter was abuzz with bhakts trolling the filmmaker for returning what was not entirely his, fellow liberal and filmmaker Anand Patwardhan came out strongly in Banerjee’s defence. Said Patwardhan, “Honestly, I don’t see any wrong in what Dibakar did. As liberals, we have always aired our own personal views as the opinion of Indian society at large. Have we ever sought permission from the Indian public to shoot our views off their shoulders? Why should Dibakar take Savita’s permission to return the joint award then? This is a classic case of gross intolerance shown by Savita.”
Meanwhile, writer Nayantara Sahgal announced that she was stripping Banerjee of his liberal brigade membership with immediate effect unless he returned something that was his own.
A visibly shaken Dibakar told this correspondent, “Media houses had been bugging me with phone calls since morning for a reaction to Savita’s outburst yesterday. I was so embarrassed that I ignored all their calls. What would I tell them? That I didn’t have an award of my own, so I returned a joint award? I had to act fast and return something in order to re-join the ‘Secular Indian liberals’ Facebook Group. That is when this awesome idea struck me. By evening, I had missed about 20 phone calls from top TV and print editors. I decided to return all 20 missed calls, as a mark of protest against growing intolerance in the country.”
He added, “Group admin Nayantara Sahgalji has just approved my “Join Group” request. She has also texted me saying all the group members were proud of me now. I feel quite relieved. It is so much easier to return missed calls. In fact, next time when I direct a good movie and a jury selects it, I urge the government to give me missed calls instead of awards. At least, a missed call will be entirely mine and bhakts like Savita can’t rain on my parade by staking co-ownership for it. I can return it whenever I want.”
Asked about the timing of returning the award, Dibakar was candid enough to admit that his new production venture, Titli, which released last week, played a part in his speaking out now. “I was having ‘Titlis’ in my stomach about how to promote and publicize this film which had no big names associated with it. These intolerance protests definitely came as a blessing in disguise.”
