mushroom cultivation can be taken up as home scale as well industry subsidy is also provided to mushroom cultivation,
there 3 major kinds of mushroom.
1.Oyster mushroom(Plerotus sps): which can be cultivated in all most all states of india , temp requirement is 25 to 30 o C it yields around 400 to 1 kg /bag cost of bag is Rs.35, market price is 60 to 100/kg- very easy to cultivate, short durated (20to28 days) but it is also having some disadvantage that it has to be disposed off with in a day of harvest or it will be spoiled, one of best mushroom for soup preparation.
2.Milky mushroom (Calysibe indica):this is the new mushroom variety which requires hot climate 36 to 38 o C for cultivation duration is 35-45 days gives yield 700-1.25kg cost of production would be Rs.45-50, fetches more than Rs.100 /kg . one interesting thing about milky mushroom is that it can be stored open for week, if refrigerated can be stored up to 15 days there by retailers and restaurant people prefer this mushroom much .
3.Button mushroom (Agaricus bispores): this is much talked mushroom and having grate demand and market for this mushroom can be processed also .Cultivation Temperature requirement is 16 to 18 o C and it requires 3 to 4 months it can be successfully cultivated in temperate regions like J&K,Himachal but if you want to do it here it should be industry scale every day you should get 50 kg total cost to set up ranges from 50 lakh to 1 crorre.
