Ms. Sangita Dipak Sawalakhe, Director, Vidarbha Biotech Lab, Yavatmal, President VBL Agriculture Research and Health Organisation, Yavatmal, Maharashtra. She explains organic or natural farming is not possible without microorganisms and friendly insects.
It is not possible to do organic or natural farming without using microorganisms and friendly insects. In organic farming, we do not apply any chemicals, pesticides, or any other inputs. So microorganisms are the main inputs for natural and organic farming. I am working in organic farming since the last 28 years and giving free consultation to farmers and promoting how to do non-poisonous farming with the help of microorganisms. I started as an entrepreneur in 1995 with Chrysoperla and Trichogramma which are friendly insects. Then I moved on to Ha.N.P.V., Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma harzianum, Pseudomonas, Metarhizium, Beauveria, Verticillium and other entomopathogenic organisms. We have got organic input registration from APEDA.
It is a well-known fact that we are consuming poison through our food, and it is very important to know how to switch over to organic farming with the help of microorganisms. We have to reduce the effect of pesticide and its residue which have caused decrease in the number of friendly insects. This has to be done immediately to strike the natural balance. So it becomes essential that we turn to organic farming.
To discuss about some of the friendly insects and fungus like, Beauveria bassiana Metarhizium anisopliea are the entomopathogenic fungus by destroying the larvae and aphids, thrips, White Grub, We do not apply pesticide when we use Verticillium lecanii is another entomopathogenic fungi which has impact on sucking pests such as aphid, mealybug, white fly etc. It is a very sensitive microorganism gives better result when pesticide is not used. Metarhizium anisopliea is another entomopathogenic fungus that gives best result from larva and sucking pests and white grubs that are found in the soil near the root zone because the white grub larvae eat only the roots of any plant. So Metarhizium anisopliae gives best result. The white grub has a one year life cycle (eggs, larva, pupa & adult ). This causes damage to the roots of the plants, and hence it is considered as highly dangerous pest in the world. Metarhizium is the best microorganism to control the white grub. When Metarhizium is used, the pest dies, develops a dark green colour fungus. We have to drain the Metarhizium in the field and drench 15 days before the time of sowing or 15 days later.
Trichoderma harzianum is a very good biopesticide and bio fungicide. It is a filamentous fungus working on the root nematodes and other diseases and pathogens in the soil. Trichoderma viride addresses various diseases in the soil. It is a base solution like fungicide, but it is a bio fungicide. Trichoderma controls the diseases, works as an organic growth regulator, decomposting the organic matter. Pseudomonas fluorescens is a bacteria working on various diseases causing bacteria such as mildew and other diseases and control the disease. Some of the growth promoter bacteria are Rhizobium, Azotobacter, PSB, and KMB which are helpful bacteria and biofertilizer used for the growth of the crop. We have a new product called VBL Biocon, a liquid biofertilizer consortia. In this we add Rhizobium, Azotobacter, PSB, and KMB. It is useful for all types of crops, fruits, vegetables, and other plants. Drenching and spraying also gives best result by supplying nitrogen, phosphorous, potash, and other nutrients. We have VBL D culture decomposting culture that becomes organic matter. It is very useful in field and household waste materials also. We have VBL - Microbiomix which has 16 types of useful microorganisms which help in solving various types of problems in the field. The first one is bio culture for decomposting as it decomposts the organic matter very quickly. The composting process is completed in 15 days.
The Microbiomics is a growth promoter providing nutrients and enzymes to help plant growth. It contains 16 microorganisms tht can help in controlling the various diseases and pests and is considered a very good product in the agriculture field. Mycorrhiza is a fungus that helps growth of root zone and takes large quantity of nutrients to the soil. Only 100 grams of this product is used in the field per acre. We can use that only once in the plants’ lifetime. Trichogramma chilonis is a parasite that comes to us at a very low cost. Farmers can spend minimal amount only for using in the field. When we use Trichogramma chilonis, we do not use any pesticide as it will destroy the friendly insects found in the field. We have many friendly insects in the field, such as lady bird, beetle, and we should not use pesticide as it will kill these insects too.
We can use a Juilee’s Nutri basket for kitchen and terrace garden. This is an organic customised kit and we can use it for 10 kinds of indigenous seeds. We provide a decomposting culture in it to make organic compost. It has 3 growth promoters in it. There are a few guidelines for using the microorganisms in the field. They are non-toxic, residue free and organic certified inputs for farming. We should not use chemical pesticide or fungicide while using this product. We have to use clean equipment when spraying the product and not the one used for spraying pesticide. It is a biological input and controls multiple generations of insects and pests step by step. Any chemical free farming increases friendly insects in the farm to improve the yield. It does not allow to develop resistance power in the pest unlike chemical pesticide. It is eco-friendly and does not eliminate any species from the ecosystem. Organic farming maintains the natural food system, natural control, increses organic yield, and improves soil health. We give our microorganisms to all farmers, FPO, and organic farming companies.
What space is needed to use kitchen gardening kit effectively? What types of plants and herbs are commonly found in kitchen gardening kit?
There is no specific size for it. We can use it in our terrace, balcony, etc. It is basically an urbanisation concept. So we have to grow food organically and eat them. They are only indigenous and no hybrids.
