ABOUT TEAK : KING OF WOOD

ARTICLE – 4

A BRIEF NOTE ON KARNATAKA STATE:

The state of Karnataka has 1,91,791 sq.km. of geographical area, in that total forest cover is 32,382 sq.km. having teak forest area is 1,401 sq.km. that is 4.3% of total forest area. Teak forest in Karnataka is principally confined along the Western Ghats. They are classified into the following:
1.Moist deciduous teak forests:
In this stretch of teak forests, rainfall varies from 1500-2030mm.
2.Mixed deciduous teak forests:
Here the annual rainfall varies from 1210 to 1520 mm.
3.Dry deciduous teak forests:
Here the rainfall decreases and varies between 890 to 1140 mm.
4.Dry teak forests:
Here the habitat is dry, on account of paucity of rainfall. The rainfall is below 890 mm. These forests are located in the eastern part facing outer ranges of the Western Ghats.

Teak is the premier timber of Karnataka’s forests, and Dan deli teak is as famous as Burma teak for its golden colour and fine grain. It occurs mainly in mixture with other hard wood timbers in the mixed moist and dry deciduous forests, mostly in the Western Ghats and some off-shoots of the Eastern Ghats. In the past these forests were worked intensively under Uniform or Selection systems to increase the proportion of teak, and when natural regeneration failed to come up sufficiently, under clear-felling and (artificial) planting with teak stumps.

A number of plantation schemes launched with public subscriptions have failed to deliver the promised high rates of growth of timber, but individual land owners have planted teak on farm boundaries, vacant patches, etc. Studies are required to work out suitable silvicultural and management practices for farm forestry conditions, e.g. economically optimum spacing, thinning regimes, plant protection, utilization, marketing etc. When natural regeneration failed to come up sufficiently, artificial regeneration practices were developed, e.g. clear felling and planting with nursery raised teak ‘stumps’.

Teak plantations has traditionally been a high priority in the State’s forestry operations, and some 1,46,367 hectares have been raised up to December 2001, with annual targets of around 2000 ha. being the norm. During the late 1970’s and early 1980’s owing to the general disapproval in the country of clear felling and other drastic interventions in the natural forest, the practice of clear felling and burning in concentrated patches to create conditions favourable for establishment of planted teak stumps in the moist deciduous forests has been given up. In Karnataka State is available in villages around Bijjawara some 40 km. from Bangalore in Devanahalli Taluk, involving dozens of land owners and around 1, 00,000 trees planted.

TREE IMPROVEMENT ACTIVITIES IN THE STATE OF KARNATAKA:

Teak has always been a high priority species in tree improvement programmes of Karnataka Forest Department. The following are the main activities.
i. Identification of provenances in natural forests.
ii. Identification and management of Seed Production Areas (SPA) and management of Seed Stands, both mainly in older plantations, amounting to some 964 hectares as per Karnataka Forest Department (KFD) research report, 2001.
iii. Selection of Candidate Plus Trees (CPT’s), 569 identified by 2001.
iv. Testing of provenances, of half-sib progeny , and of clonal propagules.
v. Raising of Seedling Seed Orchards (SSO’s -30ha.), and Clonal Seed Orchards (CSO’s -355 ha.), mainly with offspring and grafts/cuttings of Candidate Plus Trees.
vi. Experimentation with tissue culture.

Conclusion of Seven Hills Invitro Labs Pvt. Ltd.,(SHILP) Tirupati:

The Karnataka Forest Department has best knowledge in producing of clonal teak tissue culture plants through their selected mother plants. The Karnataka Forest Department and other research wings of the State are saying that the clonal tissue culture teak plants are having the best performance in growth. But, still now, the Karnataka Forest Department is mainly practicing raising of teak plantations with seed origin based rooted cuttings. The private farmers of the Karnataka state are also in same practices of raising teak plantations. Keeping in view of the wealth of the Karnataka State, it is very best to implement clonal teak tissue culture plants, to obtain maximum expected yield compared with seed origin based teak stumps.

In this connection, we, the Seven Hills Invitro Labs Pvt. Ltd., Tirupati, is proudly saying that, if any opportunity will come to us from the Karnataka State Government, we will produce the Karnataka State variety of teak clone “TELI” in mass way, which is most useful to the wealth of the State Government of Karnataka, and also for the private teak farmers of the State of Karnataka.

Hello Madam/Sir,

Other than water logging soils are suitable for teak
For block plantation ideal spacing is 10 feet * 10 feet.whereas in border plantation spacing is 6 feet in between two plants. Pit size is 45 cm dia and 45 cm depth.
Farm yard manure or vermi compost is the best nutrient while planting time 2 kg for each pit.
Drip irrigation is suitable for teak.In case of manual watering ,it should be done based on plant age. For 1 month old plant (up to 1 month) - daily watering, for 4 months old plant - once for every 4 days and for 8 months old plant - once for every 10 days
tissue culture teak plants r having adventitious root system.

In India we are producing 7 breeders of tissue culture teak ,which r suitable for all over INDIA and another 120 countries in the WORLD. In this mail i have sent detailed information regarding tissue culture of teak plants. If interested please make a call or send e mail to share our views
