About System: This system consists of specially designed PVC tubes with plant sites. Nutrient solution is introduced at a fixed rate at one end so as to form a thin film inside the tube. The solution drains out at the other end. This is collected and recycled. While moving through the tube it nourishes the roots of the growing crop.
Seedlings are germinated in an inert media such as rockwool, oasis cubes etc. When they reach transplant stage, they are transferred into the plantsites in the NFT channels. Once in the channels the progress of the crop is very rapid. The crop does not have to compete with weeds and fed precisely. Unlike the field grown where the challenges of growing a crop is at odds with several adverse factors.
NFT systems are housed in a controlled environment greenhouse. They are very suited for growing lettuce, salad greens and herbs. With a little modification tomatoes can easily be grown successfully. In a field situation we can obtain one or maybe two crops of lettuce a year. With the introduction of the NFT system lettuce and many crops can be produced year around. This gives the producer a consistent product and they would be able to enter into contracts. Buyers are in great need of consistent and reliable suppliers. The NFT system may bridge the gap between the supply and demand for lettuce and herbs.
