Deejay Consultancy Services started in 1983 when a United Nations expert by the name of Professor Anthony Davis suggested that a hybrid coconut-breeding project be started in Madurai. Now, Deejay Consultancy runs in Bangalore and specializes in the production of hybrid seed nuts for selected palms. Mr. David J. Lobo is now the chairman of the consultancy service and oversees the company’s production of hybrid seed nuts and seedling production.

Products
Hybrid coconut palm seedlings are the main product of Deejay Consultancy Services with over 15 lakh hybrid seedlings in their arsenal. Since their establishment, the company has successfully established a name for quality with their seedlings doing very well in the Indian market. Their main seedling, the Deejay Hybrid, is a synthetic dwarf palm that took 28 years to develop. Deejay Hyrbids are only available at their farms in Madurai and Ambur (Tamilnadu), Bailur (Karnataka) and Sangeum (South Goa).

Success
The Deejay Hybrid owes its success to its superior genetic potential. Studies show that it produces hybrid coconut palms with a much higher productivity including “heavier copra [and] larger nuts with more tender coconut water.” Advanced orders from farmers all over India have proven the hybrid’s staying power in the market.

“Performance results from very manly hybrid gardens have resulted in the Deejay Hybrid becoming the preferred planting material for maximum productivity,” Mr. Lobo supplied. “Virtually 90% of new orders come from [the regions of Pollachi and Udumalpet area of Tamil Nadu.]”

Deejay Hybrids also yield products much faster than ordinary tall coconut palm varieties. While ordinary palms need seven years to yield and ten to stabilize, Deejay Hybrids start yielding after two years and stabilize in five. Special agricultural practices also add to success.

Mr. Lobo recommends using the drip system for irrigation and supplementing chemical fertilizers with organic ones. Palms should also be spaced properly, no more than 70 palms per acre, to ensure that each palm gets enough sunlight.

Challenges and Marketing
A lengthy but fruitful process is involved with coconut farming. For starters, before starting coconut farming a minimum of 100 litres of water per day for each palm is necessary although coconut palms do well in most types of soil. Time is also a crucial requirement.

With Deejay Consultancy Services their main trial was insufficient irrigation caused by drought. Challenges also arose with marketing due to an initial lack of knowledge and the need for a good coconut hybrid. However, now that the Deejay Hybrid has established itself a quality product, Mr. Lobo feels that the product virtually markets itself. “A quality product is its own advertisement and word of mouth is the medium,” he said.

Future Plans
Mr. Lobo estimates that coconut-farming market will grow exponentially to USD 400 million from last years USD 265 million by the end of this year. According to him, coconut based products are in very short supply. As such, the market is likely experience a boom very soon.

Due to the success of the Deejay Hybrid, the company has started new breeding projects in Ambur, Bailur, and Sangeum. Also in the works are breeding projects for the markets of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Orissa and Maharashtra. With daily advanced orders coming in from farmers all over India, the company has made it their priority to accomplish high production goals for the future.

“Hopefully, we will produce one million seedlings four years from now,” Mr. Lobo said. “It is sad that farmers have to wait for 15 months for orders to be filled. We are doing our best to save them from this loss and waiting.”

So what are your impressions after reading the article. Feel free to share your thoughts and opinions as well as post the queries if any. Mr. David J. Lobo or the editorial team of agricultureinformation.com shall be monitoring the thread.

Dear Mr. Lobo,

It is mentioned on the website “Most farmers who had experimented with “hybrid” coconut seedlings burnt their fingers, by being supplied doubtful, untried and in the most part bogus “hybrids”.” How do Deejay’s coconut hybrid seedlings give farmers better yield and better profits?

Regards,
Shweta

In the first place, the selling of dubious or fake “hybrids” continues, usually before the rainy season. As much as we try, we have not been able to stop the bogus “Andhra Deejay” and “Kerala Deejay” hybrids from being sold to gullible farmers. We have no agents and all sales are direct from our own breeding stations. Hence earlier experiences of farmers who bought such expensive “hybrids”, most being bogus, have left a bad taste in the mouth for many victims and their neighbours.

The Deejay Hybrid in general flowers in one third the time [two years] and yields three times the number of nuts per palm per annum [250 plus]. Many farmers exceed these figures. Many earn over Rs. 1 lakh per acre per year, and those selling Tender Coconuts for water, located in zones near big cities are earning over Rs. Two Lakhs per annum. Yields go up by a third when nuts are harvested by about the 7th month. While this is impressive, Deejay has a full-fledged research team, full time in finding further improvements and better hybrids.

As answered by Mr. Lobo.

The Coconut tree produces a flower (spathe) and therefore a bunch of coconuts with every leaf, and the Deejay Hybrid produces more leaves than any other palm- up to 22leaves per year compared to the normal 12. Proper spacing for adequate light, timely and adequate irrigation is most important followed by proper micro and macro nutrient feeding. Therefore regular but easy management is needed to sustain the highest productivity. We recommend our farmers follow a set of precise guidelines as published in our booklet called “Coconut Cultivators Guide” in English and in vernacular languages for all stage of the plant [available on request]. Our service team is also available to guide the customer. Once the farmer sees bunches of coconuts hanging at ground level in the third and fourth year of planting he will be the most satisfied person.

Coconut cultivation

In this occasion we will honour Dr.Henry Louis, the first indian promoted the "D x T " coconut breed. The D X T breed leads the great revolution in coconut cultivation.Normally the coconut breeders will advice the farmers to plant in the fertile land & good water in taste for irrigation. But i heard from some coconut planters that the coconut planatation were done in the hill slope & foot hills .The soil also not very fertile and irrigation also rain water .But in india we are doing the culting in the very fertile land like Pollochi, udumalaipettai, shimoga & Chickmagalur.and also now a days the coconut cultivation is not profitable while comparing with annual crops. But the coconuts are required in in all occasion like worship of god ,marriages and all functions are started with coconuts. In this ocasion we also promoted and propagagted DxT RaamGanga variety .its very nice to the farmers .Even in the barren lands are suitable & saline water also sufficient. The DxT Raamganga coconut tree gives eighteen fruit bunches .The yield patter will be minimum 280 nuts and maximum 325 nus per year per tree. The first flower buch will comes on completion of eighteen months( subject to irrigation method like minimum 80 liters , sufficient manure & care).ours ramganga coconut can be used for tender coconuts aswellas matured coconuts.the tender coconuts are very sweeter than other dxT coconuts. One special thing in one bunch all tender coconuts are contained with same sweeter taste.

It is correct that inter cropping in coconut farms is gaining momentum. Many of our customers have already gone into planting of Cocoa, nutmeg, lemon etc., as inter crops and are getting additional income from the same area of farming without affecting the productivity of coconut. As long as the farmer is able to provide required nutrition for both the main crop and the inter crop there should not be any drawback. However the farmers have to be careful about the crops that compete in the same area for the same type of nutrition.

Intercrop in coconut garden

The intercrop cultivation in coconut gardens was introduced & done in kerala and tamilnadu 10 years back.In Pollachi ,Tamilnadu the intercrop cultivation like nutmeg, cocoa & pepper was done by a farmer as multi layering farming for additional income.I Think its does not effect the yield of coconut cultivation.

Yes., I also agree with this statement. '“Most farmers who had experimented with “hybrid “coconut seedlings burnt their fingers, by being supplied doubtful, untried and in the most part bogus “hybrids”.

Both Government as well private sectors the quality consciousness is deteriorating. More reliable and quality guaranteed firms may be an alternative.

Coconut is a long term crop. The life span of a tall coconut is about 100 years. My personal farm level experiences and practices in Coconut is bringing out the following,

1. Sufficient spacing (Not out of the printed books) must be by experiences. One Tamil adage is “if a person having 1000 coconut of wider spacing (Squirrels unable to jump between trees) is equal to the King in terms of life. (In Tamil it was spelled as “Annil Thava Maram Ayiram Irunthal Rajavukku Samam”). We can convert this adage in practice as follows, Total length of a leaf multiplied by two Plus two feet is the spacing for the coconut. E.g if a length is 14 feet means 14 X 2 = 28 + 2 = 30 is the spacing between trees.
2. Individual tree ( each and every tree must be numbered) care is needed
3. No need to irrigate the entire basin instead irrigate via drip at 3 feet away from the base of the tree
4. Keep mulch (self mulching by using the coconut leaves of the same tree) over the basin to arrest weed growth and conserve the moisture

Important aspects of coconut cultivation -

Coconut is not like other crops. When we look at its importance coconut may consider being an ‘ATM card’ of the Farmer. All the parts of the coconut trees are beneficial and named earlier year as ‘Karpagavirutcham’. Coconut cultivation is strictly a tropical tree ideal for irrigated garden lands with good drainage facilities.

Climatic and Soil Conditions best suitable for Coconut Cultivation

Dry humid weather is ideal. Medium fertile to high fertile soils are ideal. Drainage and the better aeration in the soil was the most fit for coconut cultivation.
