How to replenish unused wells

Hi,

We are about to buy a agri land and seek some guidance from experienced people. That land has not been cultivated for years and has 2 unused wells. The wells were dug nearly 10 years back and each has depth of around 20-30 feet. They should have just dug it and left unused. Not even any concrete walls constructed around the wells. Now both are dry (i dont know for how long they are dry) and i want to know if it can be transformed into a proper irrigation well to be used for irrigation. Can they be dug again or can we drill a bore well inside them? Or what else can be done to replenish the wells.

When i looked inside the wells, after some 6-10 feet deep there is slight reddish brown rock till deep in both the wells. I am not fluent in agri -soil terms. In tamil we call that rock as sukkaam paarai. Will this rock have any indication about the water potential?

If this rock is spread through out the land. will it be a hindrant for deep rooting trees. I want to grow timber trees like teak, Gmelina arborea & Melia dubia.

Around this land, there are many farms and are in very good shape. They are getting irrigated even in summers and as far as i heard no complaints on water or soil.

Since the land has not been cultivated for years you have fresh soil.
but it would be advisable to do a soil and water test before buyingthe land if you intend to do cultivation.

You have mentioned that the wells are 20 to 30 feet deep. Before you do any thing on the well take a good look at the wells in other farms surrounding your land. The depth and the availability of water will give you a picture of the water table in that area.

Only if there is abundance of water in your surrounding area should you think of digging deeper into the well. You can also think of bore-well within the well but beware they only drill 4.5" with most of the bore-wells dug within the well do not go down straight. So only if the water table is above your well depth will this be useful.

You can go for tube wells from the top of the land. This Will work out to be more cheaper than digging into the well.

In our farm we have a small check dam 40 feet away from our bore-well and it has done wonders in replenishing our tube well. You can also build a small holding hole for water to get collected.

I think the type of rock that you have mentioned is porous rock. If you have 10 feet of good soil then by the time the roots of the timber trees that you have mentioned reach the rock they will be well established its roots will find its way through porous rock.
