Distinguished Professor of Horticulture, Prof. Teruo Higa, developed EM (effective microorganism) at the University of the Ryukyus, Okinawa, Japan in the early 1980’s.
EM is a liquid concentrate containing a consortium of beneficial microbes, which acts as soil conditioner for the soil. It acts as an anti-oxidant and develops a conducive environment for the crops to grow. Over 140 countries are using this technology successfully today.
EM mainly consists of Lactic Acid bacteria (Lactobacillus spp.), Photosynthetic bacteria (Rhodopseudomonas spp.), Yeast (Saccharomyces spp.). EM includes both aerobic and anaerobic species of microorganisms, which co-exist in an environment of pH below 3.5. These microorganisms are neither imported, exotic, genetically engineered or modified.

This application manual has been made to serve as a guide to all users of EM Technology. Adoption of EM Technology is farmer driven. Most of the package of practices described here have been tried and tested by the farmers. Most farmers have evolved their own package of practices taking this application manual as a guide. EM usage involves a two-step process of making various inputs by the users themselves and then applying them on the field.
In India, has got exclusive rights to manufacture and market EM Technology based products for Agriculture, Horticulture, Floriculture, Animal Husbandry, Aquaculture, Solid Waste Management and Waste Water Treatment.
Maple Orgtech (I) Ltd. is manufacturing and propagating EM in India under agreement with EMRO, Japan. EM technology was developed by Dr. Teruo Higa in Japan.
EM stands for ‘Effective Microorganisms’. It is a consortium of different strains of beneficial and effective microorganisms, both aerobic and anaerobic in nature. It is processed by EMRO personnel under strict quality standard in Maple Orgtech Kolkata. These organisms are collected from the natural environment and not imported, exotic or genetically engineered. The main microbes are Lactobacillus, Photosynthetic bacteria, yeast.
Agriculture practiced with EM.1 technology follows five principles.
The principles are as follows:
1) Production of safe and nutritious food for better health.
2) Improves economic and holistic benefits to both producers (farmers) and consumers.
3) Sustainability and ease of practice by every person.
4) Conservation of the environment.
5) Production of sufficient food of high quality for the increasing populations.
Framing with EM technology is a way that harmonizes with nature .Hence; it is a living process that blends all components of agricultural ecosystems to provide healthy food to all living beings, while maintaining the sustainability.
