COVID-19 is exposing the flaws of our current agriculture and food systems and is forcing us to reflect on the changes we need to make to achieve a food system that adequately nourishes people and sustains the planet.

We cannot simply hope that things will go back to normal soon – but we can restart and steer a new journey differently with a new vision – Agricultural biodiversity and diverse agro produce value chain development !

The way we produce and consume our food is clearly hurting both people and the planet.
Our dietary habits are becoming more similar to each other, relying on a few major cereal crops such as rice, wheat and lentils as well as sugar and oil etc. as a result of this homogenization thousands of cultivated and wild food plants are no longer used, despite their nutritional value.
Losing this variety of plants is not only a nutritional issue.
It also undermines the resilience of our food systems to pests, diseases and climate change
It is time for a rethink, restart and reverse conventional Agricultural methodology to Agricultural biodiversity

Agricultural biodiversity is a concept based on universal law of nature.
The basic law of the Universe is – Sustainability and Diversity!
Every single grain of sand is different in shape ; every single leaf of a same plant is different , and every finger print of a human being is different …..which applies in farming as well .
There is no such “ Templates” or “Plug-n-play” or “Xerox copy” or “One size fits all “ “ Duplicate “ concept in Agriculture – what works for one farmer, in one region, in one agro climatic condition with one specific crop, doesn’t typically translate to another region with another farmer or land .

The concept Agricultural biodiversity is to integrating actions that conserve and sustainably use biodiversity under and over the soil into strategies for production sectors such as agriculture , fisheries, livestock and forestry and on farm multi product value chain development .

For an example a farmer who is cultivating Maize can earn from 5 simple value chain development at his farm end with same crop

1.Maize kernels
2. Corn silage
3. Corn cob briquette or charcoal or activated carbon .
4.Corn silk
5 .Annual medicinal or wild edible plant species cultivation as cover crop

The concept of Agricultural biodiversity is to integrate actions that conserve the nature and sustainably use biodiversity under and over the soil with innovative methodology

One young new generation farmer in West Bengal successfully implemented Agricultural biodiversity concept and now expanding to other states .
