We are just about to buy a farm land and wanted to get the basics right as we venture into farming. What is a comprehensive guide or a walk through for this? Any advise?

Welcome, and thank you for your question — it's great to see your enthusiasm as you prepare to enter the world of farming!

Before making big decisions, it’s important to pause and reflect on a few key questions. Getting the basics right now will save you time, money, and effort in the long run.

Some initial questions to consider:

What is your end goal?
Why are you interested in buying land? Are you looking at commercial farming, organic cultivation, weekend farming, or simply growing for self-consumption? Or, are you interested in purchasing farm land just for investment purposes? Your long-term goal will influence the type of land, crops, investment, and effort required.

Where are you located?
Which state and region in India are you in? Agriculture laws will vary from state to state; they will determine whether you can buy land there. Local geography and climate will determine what crops can be grown successfully, and what challenges you may face (e.g. water availability, soil type, weather conditions).

What is your current level of experience in agriculture?
Have you done any farming before, even on a small scale? If not, consider starting with a small pilot project before investing heavily. Maybe tie up with a friendly farmer, make a small investment, and help him grow something. See what works and what problems arise. See whether you feel comfortable in dealing with rural India.

Talk to friends or family who are in farming.
If you know anyone with farming experience, speak to them. Real-world advice — especially from your local area — can give you insights that books and videos can’t.

Research local land prices and water availability
Don’t rush into purchasing land. Check if it has a reliable water source—this is critical for most types of farming.
