Dr. Basavaprabhu L. Patil is the Principal Scientist at ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bengaluru, Karnataka. His interest are viral diseases of plants and their management.
Dr. Basavaprabhu L. Patil says plant viral diseases cause serious crop damages and yield losses across the world and hence posing a huge risk to the food security. Almost every economically important crop plants are affected by viral diseases, against which there are no formulations for treating these viral diseases, unlike the fungicides against fungi and the bactericides against bacteria. Viruses are highly diverse in nature causing diverse range of symptoms, with either DNA or RNA in various forms as their genetic material.
During this meeting Dr. Basavaprabhu L. Patil will briefly discuss about conventional methods for managing the viral diseases and about the biotechnological interventions in greater detail for managing plant viral diseases; cutting edge technologies, such as RNA-interference and Genome Editing for the management of Viral diseases.
