Hello everybody,
I heard that there is tissue cultured eucalyptus plants available and they will grow without water. These plants are growing extensively in and around East coast it seems. The intersted parties who can supply please write to us in this forum with contacts. Initially we procure 5000 plants and if all goes well with the material we require another 20000 plants. We are planning to plant these plants around Mysore, Karnataka. Parties who will supply should also need to provide information on these plants that how they will grow without water. Please reply at the earliest. Thanks Anand. Dear Mr. Anand,
Seasons Greetings! Tissue Culture Eucalyptus plants are not a success story. Instead u can go for Cloned plants of Eucalyptus. Then, even if u go for TC plants, it needs irrigation in the first year. Or if you plant them in the rainy season, if the rains are there no need to irrigate. But it needs irrigation support either by organised or by rain. It is false that the TC plants grow with out irrigation. If u beleive, u will be landed in trouble. TC plant cultivation is not viable, not economical and not advisable. In eucalyptus best is cloned version which is proven and dependable. Still if u want TC plants, u can contact us. Send a Private Message through this portal. Hi,
Eucalyptus tissue cultured plants also need watering like other eucalyptus plants as per requirement. But their performance in feild depends on the quality of plants which may vary from Lab to Lab producing them. If they are of good quality, you would get far better returns than seed raised plants or other plants. Regards, Kuldeep Barna |

Sir,
Eucalyptus globulus is the Blue Gum and is suitable for growing in higher altitudinal regions. They do not grow well in lower altitudes, especially for Mysore which is also hot. You may go in for Eucalyptus citriodora though I am not sure whether there will be good oil content. The species suitable for hotter climates are Eucalyptus camaldulensis and E. tereticornis both of which were being promoted by the Institute of Tree Breeding and Genetics, near Avinashilingam University, Coimbatore (this was about 2 years ago). Yours, D. Suresh Baburaj, Ooty. |

While I largely agree with your other views, it is a sweeping statement that Tissue Culture of Eucalyptus is not a success story. Production in this case should go on in millions for the project to make sense for any tissue culture laboratory and no user industry supported since they were more comfortable with macropropagation process which is available and easily adoptable to meet the demand. Tissue Culture is applicable when the number of mother plants of a desired clone is limiting. I have personally worked on Eucalyptus and utilized tissue culture to reclaim salinity and waterlogging affected wastelands in Nashik district and performance of plantations was excellent and economically attractive. Please see index for economics of the plantations. Tissue culture has potential to be used complementing the existing methods for production as well as improvement in Eucalyptus. Regards.
