Provides insight into poultry feed formulation

“Poultry is a very important sector in agriculture and feed is its’ foundation. Indian poultry industry is dominated by hybrid breeds namely broiler (chicken) and layer birds (eggs). In order to earn good profits from the commercial poultry farms it is must to feed these hybrid breeds with best quality food that gives enough energy for day-to-day activities and proteins for everyday growth. In addition birds need essential amino acids that act as the building block precisely methionine (Met) and lysine (Lys). Rest the feed must have all the required minerals and nutrients. If the feed is good the birds would grow well and develop resistant to diseases,” says Dr. Debashis Dutta, founder and director, RR Animal Health Care.

Dr. Debashis Dutta completed his education in 1999 and worked for Indian and MNCs before turning entrepreneur in 2005. RR Animal Health Care is located at Hyderabad. It is engaged in imports, manufacturing and marketing poultry health care products under five segments namely antibiotics, bio-security products (disinfectants, water sanitizer), nutritional products, non-nutritional products and pest control products.

In nutritional products company manufactures 15 products categorized as nutrition through feed and nutrition through water. “Being a veterinarian I have developed the poultry feed formulations in most scientific and advanced manner. It implies the feed are formulated considering the poultry birds’ requirement for energy and protein. The feed has the age proportionate mix of amino acids, fiber, calcium, chlorine fluoride, salt, phosphorous, toxin binder, mineral mixture, phosphorous and other minerals. We strictly follow all the parameters. Only after intense study the feed variants are formulated,” asserts Dr. Dutta. All the products are sold across the country (93%) and exports to African countries (7%). Company has presence in all the Indian states. “We are supplying feed to Indian chicken companies regularly.”

The nutritional products produced by RR Animal Health Care are priced competitively and proffers satisfactory return on investment. Feed is quoted as investment because it the major overhead cost for the farmers and his profits largely depends on the feed given to the birds. The feed can be compounded within the farm too. There are three main factors to be considered when formulating the feed.

First - ingredients in the feed need to be decided on the basis of availability and cost. “To fulfill the requirement of energy in poultry birds, chicken farmer can opt for maize/wheat/broken rice in the feed formulation. Similarly for protein farmers can give soya meal/fish meal/bone meal or different kinds of oil cakes such as mustard oil cake/groundnut oil cake/soyabean oil cake. Now which ingredient to add and in how much quantity totally depends on the accessibility and price. For example in Jammu and Kashmir adding maize in feed is better than adding broken rice while in South India broken rice is more suitable,” he elaborates.

Second - feed formulation depends on the breed of the birds. The feed of broiler birds is nutritionally rich than layer birds. “In the feed of broiler birds, oil cakes and oil are added because it contains more calories. Broiler birds are raised for weight gain hence higher the calorie intake higher will be weight gain. On the contrary oil is not added in the feed of layer birds,” he explains. Layer birds need high protein content as it enhances the birds’ ability to lay eggs.

When asked about the role of feed in the quality of eggs produced by the layer birds, Dr. Dutta responds, “High protein content in the feed of layer bird is mandatory. It enhances the egg laying capacity and slightly affects the size of egg. Further size of the egg varies as per the laying cycle of the bird. Every bird has 72 weeks life cycle. When the bird begins laying eggs, in the initial weeks the size of the egg will be small while it would be bigger during the later stage cycle.”

Third – development stage of the chicken. ‘In broiler we have three feed variants- pre-starter (first 10 days), starter (11-25 days) and finisher (26-40 days). The variations include change in the proportion for nutrients and minerals. Starter feed contains more of crude protein as it important to build the body and develop resistance to disease while finisher feed is more focused on weight gain so contain oils. By the end of 40 days the bird gains 2 kg weight,” he states. In feed for layer there are five feeds – chick mash ( 0-8 weeks), grower mash (9-16 weeks) and layer mash is further divided into three feed namely early feed (17-39 weeks), mid feed (40-54 weeks) and late feed (55-72 weeks).

“Good feed and proper management are the two keys to success in poultry farming business. Feed must be given utmost attention,” Dr. Dutta highlights and adds, “I foresee bright future of poultry in India. Our Indian poultry industry is quite matured in terms of technology and awareness on nutritional requirements as compared with the African countries.”

In time to come RR Animal Health Care plans to launch new products. “We are having a separate research extension to bring innovative products in feed segment for poultry and other animals. We want to consolidate it with our present operations and develop new techniques and products for giving a boost to the industry at large,” he signs off.
