MELIA DUBIA Cultivation:

Once we decide to cultivate the tree means first go with good seedling collection from reliable sources or Forest Departments.

When direct sowing the seed without treatment , the germination percentage is less(20%). So we do alternate soaking and drying in cold water, the period of germination is 20 days and 75% germination is expected. Those having difficulty in germination, can get the seedlings from the plant nurseries.

Then start planting in beginning of the rainy season, so irrigation is minimal or can use drip irrigation for 2 years.

The suggested Pit size is 2 feet x 2 feet. 10x10 feet spacing is needed for better girth.

Procedure of planting:
1) Dig the pit and keep it open for 1-2 weeks.

2) Then close the pit with the soil available with digging.

3) After 2 days, open the pit slightly 1/2 feet , put organic manure(Vermicompost) of 0.5 kg for each pit and plant the seedling. If sapling height is more, can use support pole for each pit to avoid breaking of sapling.

4) And irrigate in same day.

Melia dubia has 90% less side branches, so less labors are needed to maintain.
Upto 5 years, ground nut, chilli, turmeric, black gram as inter crops can be cultivated.

Timely weeding and pruning is needed.
Regards,
SWAMY.

FAQs - Melia dubia. FAQs

wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
Hi Sir,
I have 60 acre land. It is Rocky land with red soil and planning to arrange drip irrigation to plan Hebbevu/ Melia Dubia. The land is located in Kustagi, Koppal District in Karnataka state.

At this location, the rain fall is low and also has to depend on bore water.Dear Mr. Vijay, before going for Melia dubia do soil analysis. Then, melia dubia cant be flourish well in commercial terms in shallow soils. It requires deep soils. In Kustagi area in Koppal annual rain fall is less than 200mm. The climate and rain fall is suitable for Melia dubia cultivation. Provided if you take some precautions and planing. What is the volume of water avaialble from the borewells in your 60 acrefarmland??

1. How much feet do we leave the space between the trees?

If your targeted selling point is biomass industry, plant around 600 (Distance: 8' X 8') to 900 (Distance: 7' X 7') trees. or if you are targeting to sell to play wood industry plant 360 (Distance 10 X 12) plants for one acre.

2. How many tress can be planted per acre?

You can refer above answer.

3. Can the rocky land suitable to grow this Hebbevu?
Is it rocky or stone bed? Can you explain some more about the profile of your soil. If it is a shallow soil dont go for melia dubia. If the rocks or small and good volumes of soil is there you can go for melia.

4. Any differences in growth between rocky land and normal land?

Sure, on plain land growth will be good compared to rocky land. But how much rocky is your land??

5. We have to dependant on bore water so how frequently did we supply water?
How you are irrigating plants?? By drip irrigation or flood irrigation. If you have 200 LPM of water for seven working hours a day, from one borewell, you can irrigate 6 -7 acres of high density (900 plants/acre) plantation with drip. If it is flood irrigation, 1 -2 acres; If you are planning 360 plants in an acre, you can irrigate around 14 - 16 acres of plantation. This is general assumption. It depends on soil profile, topo and many other factors.

6. How long water supply required? After 1.5 or 2 years, can it grow without water or does it require for whole life span?
If the plant is established, after two years itt wont requre any irrigation. In summer give 4 - 5 irrigation to have good yield in time.

7. Does it get any diseases? If it is then is there any pesticides? How much does it cost per liter?

Pest and disease can be controlled. In good managmenet the pest & disese chances are less. Stem borer, mealy bugs, threps, sap suckers may attack. With good IPM, you can control them. It may cost you Rs.4 -6 thousands/acre/annum.

8. Is there any supplement to improve the tree growth if the growth won't happen as per expected?

Before going to the planttion, take expert advice. If the land is suitbale then go for Melia dubia. Anyhow after identifying the cause for stunted growth, it can be rectified.

9. Do we get subsidy for this plantation and or drip irrigation?
Nothng. You wint get any subsidy for melia dubia as it falls into agorforstry/timber plantation. Most of the subsidy are availabel for Horticutlure crops. Even for drip also, you wont get subsidy.

10. Is there different kind of samplings of Hebbevu?

No, it is one and only Hebbvu or Malayvembu or Kondavepa or Melia dubia. But nursserei fellow may dupe you.

11. How can we find best quality sampling? How much will it cost per sampling? Where can I get best quality samplings near to Kustagi ,Koppal district in Karnataka?
Many good nurseries are selling genuime melia dubia plants. Price depends on the quantity and on the seller. Even we can supply plants to you to Kustagi and advice you on all parameters. Any how you can take quote from all nurseries and if you feel our price is fair, you can purchase from us.

12. How much weight in cubic feet can gain in 6 - 7 years ?
Please note all values are estimations assumed on standard parameters. In high density plantation of 900 plants/acre: 50 Kg per plant.; in low density plantation around 8 - 15 Cu feet in 9/10 years.

13. What was the rate of cost per cubic feet of tree log at 5 years ago and what is the cost now?
Rs.200/- fiver years ago; Now it is around Rs250/-. But please note that no one will pay you on cu feet base. They will quote you overall price on your plantation. Y because, you are selling them as trees anon in cu feet. If it is for biomass they will pay you on ton rate. Ton rate is Rs.2000/- per ton

14. What will be the demand after 6 - 7 years?
Not only for Melia dubia, for all types of timber there will be good demand.

15. What is an ideal / good time for cutting tree? Is it 6 - 7 years or more?

It is 8 - 10 years.

16. Is there any different rate of cost for the more aged tree along with the weight?
Once you are selling on weight, thre is no such thing.

17. What type of permission required from Forest department? There is no need to take any permission to plant Melia dubia. In common, the person who is purchasing the timeber from you will take cre of all govt legal formalities as for them its a routine job. Does it mandatory? Is there any fee as per Govt. rule? No such thing. How do they charge? Is it per acre based or any other way? How much do they collect other actual fee?No charges.
18. How much does it cost to clean the land i.e. removing grounded roots, etc., after cutting the tree at the age of 6 - 7 years?

May be Rs.8k -16K/acre

19. Is there any damage or difference in soil after cutting the tree at the age of 6 - 7 years? No damage Does it suitable for any another crop after 7 years?Yes, it is suitable for any other crop.

20. Where can I get marketing? Can you please give me contact details of timber depots who are buying these near by Koppal in Karnataka?

There is excellent demand for all types of timber. All plywood industry people will take it. We even give you buy back agreement. Fro example M/s. Hunsur Plywood Works Pvt ltd., PB No.2, B M Road, HUNSUR - 571 105, Mysore Dt., Karanataka can take any volumes of timber from you any time. You can call them on 08222 252860; 252025; There are many such plywood industries are there to take your timebr across the Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

21. Can any one offering buy out / buy back option? If they do, how much do they offer? We are promoting melia dubia and sandal wood planations on buy back agreemnt.

The melia Dubia will grow in redsoil in well manner. And also the same will grow in rocky redsoil with slight variation in growth and yield. In rocky red soil the melia Dubia will not grow very fast while comparing with redsoil. The melia Dubia tree roots sense the rocky or very hardened soil immediately the tree will ready for gives side sprouts that's branches .This will not happened in normal red soil.An account of this we wnt expect the stipulated yield in stipulated period. So Mr Vijay kindly opt the multi tree crop farming like Redsanders ,sandalwood, teak,Mahagany, rosewood, gmelina arborea ,tamarind and melia Dubia in little quantum. The other parameters like rainfall, water source are ok.

For more details plz.contact us.

Thank you
