Now there are 50 emu farms across Maharastrha in Beed, Phalton, Ahmednagar, Potada and Satara.Emu hatchery named as Bhagirathi hatchery in Maharastrha expecting 30,000 emu by 2015 to make viable the industry in the state.
The Emu is a large, flightless bird from Australia. It is the second-biggest bird in Australia and the third-biggest bird in the world (only the ostrich and cassowary are bigger). The emu is also very fast; it can run up to 30 mph (50 kph). Emus also swim very well.
This huge bird lives in flocks (groups) in grass land, savannas (grasslands with some trees), and the Australian bush. The emu's life span is 10-20 years
.Phylogeny: Kingdom-Animalia, Phylum-Chordata, Sub phylum-Vertebrate, Class-Aves, Sub class-Neornithes, Super order-Ratitae,Order-Casuariformes,Family-Dormaidae,Genus-Dromaeus, and the species of the emu are Dromaius novaehollandiae. Anatomy: Emus grow to be about 6 feet (185 cm) tall and weigh about 110 pounds (50 kg). This is bigger than many adult humans. Beak is flattened dorsoventrally, wings are atrophied, feathers earth grayish to gray brownish, body is slender than ostrich, short and flat neck, head not casqued, pubic symphysis lacking, femer pneumatic, pendulous wattle, remarkable tracheal pouch (more than 30 cm),after shaft is equal to shaft, three toed feet.
Purpose of Emu farming:
1.Emu egg: Morphology of an emu egg is about 800g which is about 14 chicken eggs. Average length and width are about 130mm(slightly over 5 “) 87 mm (3.4”) respectively. Pigmentation of emu the eggs are beneath the outer shell which is deep green color.
1.Egg used as table delicacy having a pleasant taste. Storage period is longer due to its chemical composition.
2 .Infertile eggs used to make attractive painted and carved ornaments, which are sold to the public as a special gifts. Egg shell artists transform these shells in to works of arts and crafts such as music boxes ,intricate miniatures.
3.Broken egg shells used for jewelry arts. Cost of broken eggs is about equivalent to 6 unbroken eggs
2.Emu meat(gourmet):Color of emu meat is dark red gamy having texture of lean and tender. Taste is delicious .Meat is other wise known as “new heart healthy”. Emu meat specially thigh muscle is an excellent alternative of beef as per taste and texture due to high protein and less calories and sodium. Chemical composition of meat revels rich protein, irons, magnesium, potassium, and other minerals. Vitamin-c contents is more than other meat. Fat is 10 times lower in saturated fatty acid than beef. Cholesterol is less than 0.05%(45%mono-unsaturatedLDL cholesterol)..Calories 4 times lower than beef(97% fat free).Low fat meat loses moisture quickly. so it is advisable for moist heat cook. Due to its mild flavor meat accepts most seasonings. Meat respond well to sweet marinades made with honey, soy sauce, ginger, lemon juice and garlic.
