Driscoll Strawberry Associates, Inc. (dba Driscoll's) is the leading supplier and marketer of organic and non-organic strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries in the world. A third-generation, family-owned and operated company, Driscoll’s has built upon the genetic work and innovation of our founders to fulfill our mission of Continually Delighting Berry Consumers. We utilize traditional plant breeding methods to create varieties that produce the finest quality berries. This plant material is then patented, cultivated in our nurseries and supplied to our independent farmer partners around the world to grow Driscoll’s brand berries.
JOB SUMMARY: Conduct research projects to help further Driscoll’s Mission to provide consumers, with delightful fruit that supports both customers and growers. The Production Research Manager is responsible for the creation, design, and implementation of research in all growing regions in all our crops to improve the delivery of a reliable supply of high quality fruit to the consumer. When projects are complete the research leader will summarize and present results to the appropriate groups orally and in writing. QUALIFICATIONS: MS or PhD Degree or equivalent in Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Pathology, Soil Science, or related field, and 5 to 10 years of work experience. Competent with experimental design and analysis, must be able to summarize and present data and recommend improved processes. Must be physically able to work in both field and laboratory settings. Spanish/English ability would be an asset. Must maintain a clean driving record and the necessary documents for international travel. Must be a self-starter, willing to travel domestically and internationally, and have the ability to work independently and work well with growers, team members, employees, and management. RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE: Research: Research will focus on three general categories: 1) On-farm, to increase yield, profit, and quality for Driscoll’s growers in all crops; 2) Improvement of the quality of Driscoll’s fruit in the marketplace; and 3) The improvement of internal Driscoll processes to improve the reliable supply of fruit from growers, which would include diverse cross-functional work with other departments such as Breeding, Production Management and Nursery. Information Flow and Reporting: Maintain good relationships with peers, managers, subordinates, and outside groups that would include Driscoll’s growers and customers. Write experimental research reports in a timely manner. Share relevant data with the proper groups both within Driscoll’s and with growers or others. Budget and Planning: Responsible for the annual preparation of operating expense & budgets for applied research area. Team Contribution: Work cross-functionally as needed to achieve Driscoll’s Mission. Partner with others to achieve mutual goals. Supervision: Build, develop and supervise technical staff to assist in the research efforts. Support and promote safety. All supervisors are responsible for the development, training, and evaluation of employees on a continuous basis. General Responsibilities: Follow company policies and practices while representing Driscoll’s in an ethical and business-like manner in all interactions with growers, employees, government agencies, customers, etc. Protect Driscoll’s confidentiality and proprietary information and materials. Maintain a safe and professional work environment. Perform other duties as instructed by the Manager |
