Dear Members,
As requested by many members a detailed cost analysis report on the cultivation of Casuarina Junghuhniana in 1 Acre for 4 years is given below: A Material Cost 1) Cost of male sterile hybrid plants raised in polybags or in protrays @ Rs.3.00 x 3600 plants (4’ X 3’ Spacing) Rs.10800 2) Transportation cost Rs.2700 B Operation and Labour 1) Ploughing 3 times and forming of ridges and furrows using tractor Rs.1200 2) Cost of digging pits, Filling with Neem cake ,FYM & Phorate and Planting @ Rs.1.00 / plant Rs.3600 3) Labour charges for gap filling, Irrigation. pump maintenance, plant protection and pruning i yr Rs.3500 ii yr Rs.3000 iii yr Rs.3000 iv yr Rs.3000 totalling Rs.12500 4) De weeding (I yr 8, ii yr 3, iii & iv yr 2) @ Rs.600 per acre (Use power weeder) i yr Rs.4800 ii yr Rs.1800 iii yr Rs.1200 iv yr Rs.1200 totalling Rs.9000 C Fertilizer 1) FYM (Initial as basal) Rs.2000 2) N:P:K as recommended i yr Rs.1000 ii yr Rs.2000 iii yr Rs.2500 iv yr Rs.3000 totalling Rs.8500 D Pesticide / Fungicide 1) To control borer, stem canker, die back and wilt i yr Rs.200 ii yr Rs.300 iii yr Rs.300 vi yr Rs.400 totalling B] Rs.1200 [/b]E Miscellaneous 1) Live hedge (not considered) 2) Drip irrigation (not considered) 3) Unforeseen expenditure Rs.1000 F Harvesting cost 1) Price of logs given here below is exclusive of cutting and transportation. Cost will be borne by the buyer. G Interest 1) Interest on Bank borrowings (approx) Rs.2500 H TOTAL cultivation cost (A+B+C+D+E+F+G) Rs. 55,000 I Sale income : Yield in fertile soil with GAP: 65 Tons / Acre @ Rs 2000 Rs. 1,30,000 Sale of pruned material on II & III years Rs, 3,000 Sale of stem tips that are below 1.25” thickness and normally left behind by the buyer after harvest on IV yr alone will fetch Rs, 7,000 J Sub Total (130000 + 3000 + 7000) Rs. 1,40,000 K Net income after IV year (J – H) Rs. 85,000 • The cultivation cost figures and the yield estimates given in the table here above are only symbolic and sketchy. The calculations may vary depending upon the fertility of the soil, spacing, dosage of fertilizer, irrigation schedule; proper and timely pruning and other related Good Agriculture Practices. • Please note that a small fraction of farmers were getting a yield of even 80Tons and above in an acre at the end of 4th year and majority were able to get only 50 Tons – 70Tons from 4 years to even after 5th year will explain many questions on the yield front. So a realistic, achievable target of (Average yield ) 65 tons / Acre was taken for the estimates. • The prevailing price in our area is Rs.3000 to Rs.3500/ Ton. Since the cutting is normally done by the buyer in bulk plantations, farmer will get around Rs.2300 to 2800 per Ton. But in the yield estimate, a much lower figure of Rs.2000/T was taken into A/c. • A high dosage of fertilizers than the recommended NPK dosage has been arrived for the estimates. • The cost of removing the basal left out cut portion of the stem after harvest and its adjoining root system were not considered since the farmer will naturally go for the ratoon crop. In the ratoon crop farmers will get more income because expenditure on planting, cost of planting material and gap filling are NIL. • Casuarina Jhunghuniana, its genetic mutants and other related hybrid varieties can be had from Forest Extension Division, The Forest Dept., Tamil Nadu free of cost under TCPL Scheme. • I heartily welcome any kind of criticisms, doubts and suggestions to improve on this subject. Regards, Vishnu Sankar |

Dear Friends,
I recently happened to hear about a fast growing new casuarina variety called "Kapang Kupang" which may be a genetic mutant from the country of Timor ?/ Indonesia. According to the unconfirmed reports, it's growth is comparable to that of Casuarina Junghuhniana variety and unlike Junghuhniana this Kappang Kuppang is seed bearing, enabling us to propagate them easily. One can see trial plots of this variety in State forest nurseries of Tamilnadu. Members in this forum are kindly requested to provide more information about this variety which will be of great use to the like minded casuarina growers. Thanking You, Vishnu Sankar Last edited by vishnusankar; 10-03-2008 at 05:21 PM. Reason: Wrong spelling |

Dear Friend,
The fast growing new casuarina variety - "Kapang Kupang" can be seen in the trial plots of Tamilnadu State forest nursery in Neyveli and at extension nurseries of Arasanoor (Madurai to Sivagangai Road) and Pudukottai. Limited number of seedlings are also available there. Since confirmed reports on yield and it's ability to coppice were not released so far either by the department or by any private grower, I sought our forum member's help. Eagerly expecting replies. dear sir,
Please get back to us , we will proide you the project report for the same and even something about Macadomia. Thanks and regards Udyan Thanks to everyone for the valuble input on the Casuarina Jhunghuniana cultivation. I'm planning for Casuarina Jhunghuniana farming and my land is located in Thanjavur. Good water availability and the soil is fertile and sandy nature. I want to know about intercropping with Casuarina Jhunghuniana cultivation. What kind of crop can go well and at what stage I can start the intercrop. We use to grow banana earlier and had teak and coconut which we cut recently. Was looking at an alternate and came across Casuarina Jhunghuniana cultivation from a field officer for TNPL paper industry. Looking forward for a detail valid suggestion.
