Dear Sir
The tree is harvested and cut into small sections so that it can undergo a softening process. The raw material is then processed by machine to extract the fibrous material. Once the raw fibers are separated, they are bleached to give a more uniform color. Upon completion of this process, they are dried and packed into bales for shipment to the Kathmandu valley, where they are dyed and spun into yarns for rug weaving. The banana rugs under go the same weaving process as the Nepalese hand-knotted woolen rugs. The unique quality of the banana rug is that it has a look and feel that is very similar to silk but with a loose, casual feel that is not as refined as silk. The durability of the banana fiber is similar to that of silk or nettle and is not recommended for high traffic areas. The actual weight of the fiber is greater that that of wool and it is best when woven in the 100-knot version. Since it is similar to silk, it has a very luxurious quality that makes it feel expensive while being considerably less expensive that silk. Regards Kirti |

Dear Sir
C. glauca has potential for use in wide-row intercropping and, contrary to common belief, has been found to increase yields of crops sheltered Farmers usually dig a ditch between the crop and trees to minimize competition for water and nutrients. An excellent shade tree, it is planted along streets in many and zone cities. Sorry Sir I dont know about c. Jhunguniana. Ill research and get u the information. Kirti |

Dear Sir
Casuarina junghuhniana is a fast growing and highly drought-tolerant species, and it is mainly propagated by vegetative means. Two techniques Air-layering using twigs of pencil-thickness during the monsoon, and sprig planting in mist chambers were the two techniques adopted by the forest department to multiply this fast growing species. The robust saplings with good straight stems and symmetric conical crowns establish quickly in sandy tracts. The hybrid Casuarina is a heavy yielder of biomass, and it also has symbiotic association with the nitrogen-fixing organism, Frankia sp. The hybrid grows tall and is endowed with graceful needles closely resembling pine. Kirti |

Dear Jay,
Since Casurina varieties are normally planted in a narrow spacing of 2.5' x 3.5' or in some cases with even lower spacings of 2' x 3', please avoid long term / annaul crops for intercropping. Only short duration crops like minor / major millets, Maize, Sun Flower and some Vegetables are ideal for intercropping. AVOID INTERCROPS ONCE THE CASUARINA ATTAINS THE AGE OF 6 MONTHS. Regards, Vishnu Sankar |

Hi Vishnu,
Thanks for the valuble input and I understand now. If the plantation is so close does the yield still stays the same or the yield of individual tree is less but overall yield is beyond the expected level of 65 to 75 tonnes? Regards, |
|

|
Dear Friend,
Spacing determines the girth of the planted casuarina. In closely planted fields, girth / Wt of individual tree obtained will be less but the overall tonnage on fourth year may be more or less equal to that of casuarina planted with wide spacings. But after 4th year variation between the two will be drastic. Vishnu Sankar |

Thanks Vishnu for the input.
I had another query. Will I be able to grow grass or any fodder kind if I want to have a cattle farm? Will grass grow well? Any idea if anyone has tried it before? Regards, Jay |
