Our farmers grow Beetle vine /Pan leaves .They sell it at national and international level. But GUTKHA has destructed their market to a great extent. Is their any ways to survive the market?

There are several factors:

1. We need a standard extract.
2. We should know the contents
3. We should from literature or through research identify applications for the same

4. If the produce is organic in adds to the value.

We can help if you need. Contact me on info@brahmi.in

Regards

Dear Sir

Betel leaves are having some medicinal properties and the extract is been widely used in many alternative medicine preparation.

Betel leaves are considered a cough cure and decongestant and are crushed and included in small pastilles. They are also steeped in boiling water and the hot liquid drunk to bring down fever

To get a quality extract this has to be cultivated organically and also the field should be clean to avoid wilt disease which is a major problem.

Do you get leaves all 12 months of the year?
What is the quantity of leaf harvested per day?
Do you have standard parameters for bleached leaf?
What is your current process and what is the draw back to be rectified?
Where is the process set up?

Regards

Default PAN leaf

Dear sir,
Thanks for your interest.
Leaves are harvested almost round the year, with marginal/nil production during cold waves.
Almost 50villagers here are engaged in Pan farming.Around 10 traditional bleaching units found.Bleaching units are made by coverting an airtight room into heat and dry chamber. There are not any standard parameters yet.
Pan is grown here both in Saline and Neutral soil.
We want to know any other Value Addition methods as per market need.
Till date Pan farming is lucrative. But now it needs a more scientific futuristic approach to make farmers' proffit sustainable.
If you are ready ,your TEAM should visit the area.
With regards.

dear madam
The final ingredient is saliva, so the betel wad has to be chewed on in order to get the required effect. The chewing creates large amounts of red saliva, which the chewer has to spit out, and gums and lips turn bright red.

Betel chewing originated in Southeast Asia, but today it is practised from East Africa to the Pacific islands and each culture has its own variations of the ingredients of the betel chew and its use.

In Singapore and Malaysia, betel chewing was an important part of ceremonies in Peranakan culture. Peranakan means “local-born” and the Peranakan are the descendants of early Chinese settlers to South East Asia, many of whom marriaged local women. Read More "Who are the Babas" (The Peranakan Association). It was only the older women (called Bibiks) who indulged in betel chewing on a day-to-day basis.

An example of ceremonial use of betel chewing in Peranakan culture is for the wedding ceremonies, where betel chew is offered at several stages of the ceremony. One example of use of the betel nut in the wedding ceremony is when the family and friends are invited to the wedding. The betel nut is used to invite the female family members. Female guests are given a small package of small pieces of sireh with some pieces of betel nut, which are placed in a silver bowl and wrapped in a square silk handkerchief. This tradition is called hantar sireh or presenting betel.

Dear Santanu

I like to give some other value additon for betel vine apart from bleaching

1. Nowadays drying of leaves is a method

2. Essential oil extraction from the betel leaves using Betel leaf extractor. Model is there in IIT, khargapur

3. Essential oil can be used as an active ingredient in preparation of tooth paste, skin emollients, perfumes, room freshners etc.

In Srilanka following products have been made from betel leaf

Betel toothpaste
Mouthwash
Betel ointment
Betel cream and
Instant betel chew

I can send you an article about Betel leaf to your mail .
