Turkey Grows Tomatoes in Water

A private Turkish company has produced a unique type of tomato that grows only in water, which experts claim has no equivalent anywhere in the world. The Dizayn Group, a prominent player in the Turkish heating and plumbing sectors, has produced these special tomatoes that do not need soil to grow at its R&D center in the Mediterranean city of Antalya.

The total amount produced in one year is 1,600 kilograms from a single tomato seed. The product will soon be available on the market under the name Miracle.

The company worked on a project designed by two students to grow vegetables totally submerged in water in a greenhouse. Experts describe the method developed by the Dizayn Group as an international invention. Moreover, the company succeeded in producing 100 percent pure and hormone-free tomatoes with the same method.

The amount of water used in the process is even lower than the amount used with the drip irrigation technique supported by the Agriculture Ministry, said İbrahim Mirmahmutoğulları, the chief executive officer of Dizayn Group. We produce an annual amount of 1,600 kilograms of tomatoes from one tomato seed thanks to the new technology we have developed. We will sell that technology to farmers in Antalya and in the surrounding regions. Then, we will buy the product they grow with our new technology and market it under the brand name Miracle,' said Mirmahmutoğulları.

Vegetables grown by listening to Mozart
Mirmahmutoğulları, who described Dizayn's Miracle Soil-less Cultivation System' as a project with no equal in the world, noted that it will be an alternative solution to the global hunger problem.

No hormones or fertilizers were used in the production of the tomatoes nor were any alterations were made in their genes, he added. The smell and taste of our products can provide an idea of how naturally they are grown, he said, adding that they will also produce green peppers and lettuce with the same method. The Dizayn Group plans to export 60 percent of all the organic vegetables it produces in the greenhouse.

To gain maximum efficiency, those who work at Dizayn´s greenhouses act quite carefully. For instance, they never step in the greenhouse with shoes. Wearing white shirts and bonnets are obligatory. Besides, they play works from Mozart inside as to save the tomatoes from stress. Stress affects the vegetables negatively. So we play relaxing music in the greenhouses. In this way, we also examine the effects of music on growth of vegetables, added Mirmahmutoğulları.

The Dizayn Group is mainly a producer of under-floor heating pipes and indoor plumbing pipes called PP-R. But it is also known for its investments in R&D, to which it allocates 4 percent of its turnover. Currently, the Dizayn Group is the holder of a total of 84 patents and ranks second among companies with the highest number of patents in Turkey.
