Daily Mail, UK 5th October 2007
Pomegranates the size of Galia melons will hit UK stores this weekend. The new super-size fruit weigh around 650g (23oz) compared with the standard size at 350g (12.5oz). Tesco pomegranate buyer Paul Cunningham said the melon-sized pomegranates had a "wow factor". "Demand for pomegranates is soaring so fast that we thought we'd try and track down something really special to impress shoppers - this is what we came up with," he said. Growth in sales of standard versions of the 'superfood' fruit is now outpacing that of blueberries, according to Tesco. Pomegranates have surged in popularity due to their health benefits. They are high in vitamin C and contain antioxidants. The melon-sized fruits are grown in Israel and go on sale at Tesco stores from tomorrow priced at £1.99 each. |
