Stevia Biotech Pvt. Ltd strongly believes that now many markets will open up fast for the use of stevia as a high-intensity sweetener after a positive ruling by global food standards body Codex. Speaking in a food and beverage conference Mr. Agarwal mentioned that the decision from the Codex Alimentarius Commission would help countries like India, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Philippines to approve the use of stevia in food and beverage products.

He mention “Codex ruling will now accelerate the clearance process of Stevia as a food ingredient by FSSAI in India”.

EU Standing Committee’s decision earlier this week also recommend the use of stevia as an ingredient in food and beverages, though the final approval will come by November end this year.

JECFA reviewed the safety of steviol glycosides in and established an ADI for steviol glycosidesof 4 mg/kg bw/day. w3.steviaglobalforum.Kom , The Panel considers that the results of toxicology studies on either stevioside or rebaudioside A as both rebaudioside A and stevioside are metabolised and excreted by similar pathways, with steviol being the common metabolite for both.
On the request of the European Commission, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), carried out a revised exposure assessment of steviol glycosides. The exposure estimate decreased from a maximum of 17.2 from the ANS Panel opinion to 12.7 mg/kg bw/day for children but high consumers children exposures are still above the ADI of 4 mg/kg bw/day for several countries.
