A vigorous evergreen climber to the canopy of deciduous forest and secondary growths, occurring fairly commonly from Sierra Leone to W Cameroons, and extending to Zaïre.The plant has shining foliage and showy white, pinkish to purple flowers which are sweetly scented in the evening. It has decorative value.The leaves are used in Sierra Leone for gonorrhoea (8), and are added to other medicinal prescriptions to render them efficacious (7). Leaf and twig-decoction is taken orally in Ivory Coast for blennorrhoea (4, 11), and leaf-sap is put onto ulcerated sores (11). The leaves are mashed and applied to guinea-worm sores in Ghana (10). They are used as a dressing for sores in Nigeria, leaf and stem decoctions are taken for constipation (2), and the leaves are rubbed on to fever (eba) patients (15) or used to prepare a wash in fever treatment (16). The leaves (or those of Alstonia congensis, Apocynaceae) are held in Sierra Leone to be an antidote to the poison of the black-headed cobra (Naja nigricollis) The root-bark is used in Ivory Coast near the Liberian border as an antidote in food-poisoning.. The seeds have no smell but are extremely bitter. Ouabain content is 4%.
