INTERESTED GROWERS ARE WELCOME! fOR further details PLEASE contact HEMANT GUPTA SMRITI HERBS & BIO-FUEL FARM, ASSAM SOME INFORMATION ABOUT JATROPHA PLANTATION: JATROPHA (jatropha curcas linn) The dream of bio-diesel ,as an indigeneous ,renewable source of energy was established in India by ex-president Dr.APJ Abdul kalam. Jatropha curcas has the tremendous potential to become the India’s Key energy crop for bio-diesel .The oil derived from jatropha seeds has been reported as future petroleum subsititute. It can be cultivated in arid and semi–arid climatic condition, thrives well on stony, gravelly or shallow and even on calcareous soil. The tree is hardly, drought resistant and is not browsed by cattles . It grows successfully on degraded, marginal and waste land with the life span of 40 years The seeds of jatropha contains 30-40 % oil .The crude oil put through in a process to refine called trans –esrification .After refine process it can be blended at any level wih petroleum derived diesel to create a Bio –diesel blend .Bio-diesel is considered clean fuel since it has almost no sulfar, no aromatic and has about 10% built in oxygen, which help it burn fully .Additionally, bio-diesel reduces emission from diesel vehicles .The oil cake of jatropha seeds being rich in nitrogen, has been reported as the excellent source of plant nutrient. POTENTIAL IN THE NORTH-EAST INDIA Smriti Herbs and Bio-Fuel farm is committed to provide high income energy crop for production of diesel, which involves poor farmers, agriculture job communities and unemployed youth of the rural areas .The N.E region of India has large area of land that is currently classified as marginal, waste or degraded. The total area of waste land is identified as 9,31, 000 ha. North-east region is the natural choice and has the tremendous potentiality to grow a plant of bio-diesel value like jatropha. The land which has been lost their fertility or fallen out of production and not suitable for regular crops can be used for energy crops like jatropha. It will save thousand crore of foreign currency and make the barren land fertile and enrich the environment. Rural employment and poverty are the hauge problem in this region, and energy crop like jatropha offer the scale to impact poverty through providing farming jobs and source of regular income to the large community that depend upen it .with little encouragement and support from the central, state, district and sub-divisional administration, more and more farmers can be attracted for cultivation of jatropha and the status of BPL family can be conterted in to APL family. Since ,National Rural Employment guarantee Scheme (NREGS), is labour oriented scheme, it is best suited for large scale jatropha plantation. It can be included in Micro Water Shed Projet, Huriyali Scheme and also in JointForestManagementScheme(JFMC). SERVICE OFFERED We are carrying out jatropha plantation under contract Farming concept .We provide quality planting materials, Technical support regarding plantation and good yield, Buy-back agreement for harvested seeds and site management of the field .We are also tring to facilitate farmers to avail govt .and bankable schemes for initial plantation expenditure and enter in to buck-back agreement of harvested seeds. We have provided technical support for raising jatropha nursery of 15 lacs 50 thousand seedings to the Forest Division of N.C Hills and Sonitpur dist of Assam in 2006-07.We have raised two big nurseries in the Arunachal Pradesh in two districts East Skiing and Dibang vally and being in regular touch with department of agriculture,AP.to avail the facilities to the farmers. Recently, In Meghalaya we entered in to contract farming and covered around 100 ha.of land under plantation and expected to cover minimum 2000 ha.of plantation in the year 2008 in the state of Meghalaya alone. ECONOMICS The economics of jatropha cultivation is based upon our practical experience that is compatible with routine and possibilities of the local farmer with a minimum input of the man, money and materials. One ha. of plantation accommodates 2,500 Seedlings with the spacing of 2x2 meter and initial plantation expenditure for one ha cost around Rs.12500/- which includes Rs. 5000/- for planting material and the planting cost will be Rs 7500/- depending upon local labour cost and land demography. The Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural gas has fixed the price of Jatropha oils seeds in its bio-diesel purchase policy at Rs5/- per Kg, with this price the farmer can ultimetlly get an annual return of min. Rs 30000 /- per ha. in normal condition. One liter of bio-diesel can be obtained from 3.3 Kgs of seeds . The public sector oil marketing companies will purchase bio-diesel from private operators @Rs25/- per liter. Smriti Herbs and Bio-Fuel farm provide buy-back guarantee to growers if they purchase planting material from it .Otherwise we also go for buy -back agreement after looking at the quality of the plant and oil contents of the seeds . The right cultivation and processing method can produce high quality bio-diesel which can be compete with petro-diesel in the terms of price .The cost factor makes all the difference between success and failure. Jatropha being a new crop for commercial plantation, farmers require trainings, financial supports and security. The govt. should come forward and set a platform for public- private-partnership and provide liberal support to farmers for marsive plantation and awareness campaign.
