Empowers farmers in Rajasthan villages with goat farming

“It has been proved more than once that goats are like ATM! Farmers can get immediate money either by selling its milk or for meat. However, middleman walks out with the pocket full of money by fooling the poor farmers. Hence to increase income of goat breeders by providing them with better market opportunities and facilities in Jeeran cluster of block Devgarh, district Rajasamand, Rajasthan, this cluster was formed,” shares Mr. Rahul Kumar, CLF Program Manager(CPM), RGAVP.

Rajasthan Grameen Ajeevika Vikash Parishad (RGAVP) is a self-governing society set up in October 2010 by the Government of Rajasthan under the authoritative control of Department of Rural Development, enlisted under Society Registration Act, 1956. “Our society provides different prospects to small and marginal farmers that leads to monetary support and empowers them with secured earnings. Besides, Letz Dream Foundation (LDF) has signed an MOU with RGAVP under which LDF provides 42 YP(young professional) or CPMs free of cost. In order to implement RGAVP’s target and mission systematically, we have framed Cluster Level Federation (CLF) which are enrolled under the Cooperative Act. In Jeeran cluster we have identified goat farming as the profitable venture for the farmers and thereby we are giving them complete assistance on rearing and selling,” he adds.

Goats are procured from the farmers and sold in the wholesale market directly. "We successfully removed the middlemen from the system and the higher revenues generated were given to the farmers. Thus farmer income increased by 10-30%," asserts Mr. Rahul Kumar. Sirohi, Jamnapari and local breeds are raised by the farmers. Proper documentation is done for each goat collected from the farmers such as farmer name, goat weight, size, colour, breed and other details. Medical checkup is done for all the animals before taking them to the mandi for selling. “Treatment is given to the goats as required. Market price of goat is studied meticulously for the varied breeds and based on the higher selling price goats are sold. During the period of festival precisely Bakari Id our resource person who actively manages goat sales arranges the stock and finds buyer ready to pay higher price.”

Goats are sold in markets close to Deogarh namely Surat, Ajmer, Ahmadabad, Mumbai, Indore, and Delhi. In the goat business market is up for are live goats, goat meat, skins, drain, mohair and compost. “It is crucial for us to plan sales so that there is systematically supply of the required quantities at specified time intervals (approximately 250 goats are slaughtered every month). It is the key factor as it helps towards building longstanding and mutually beneficial relationships with buyers. We also ensure to keep a track on market requirements on the special occasion so that we can get good price and pass the benefit to the farmer,” asserts Mr. Rahul Kumar.

He concludes, “Goat business is an unorganized sector however the demand for good quality goats always prevails in the market. Considering the challenges and prospects profits can be earned only when market is scrutinized thoroughly. We know this hence doesn’t leave any stone unturned to sell the goats at high price to benefit the farmer!”
