With full power India is growing into Organic!

India’s agriculture is at the crossroads. Hundreds of farmers who had tried “chemical farming” are making a come back to organic and multiple-crop farming, as on the one hand the cost for chemical farming and on the other hand the potential for organic is growing rapidly. From 2007 to 2009 the area, which is used for organic agriculture more than doubled to 1.2 million hectares and the forecast for 2012 is to reach the 2 million hectare aim. With the National Program for Organic Production (NPOP) the government shows the willingness to make India a key player in the organic business. Several states in India have either declared themselves as organic states or are promoting organic farming and production vigorously. For example the State Department of Agriculture in Kerala has made a significant turn-around to promote organic production and marketing of organic food by launching a programme and policy for ‘Organic Sustainability of Kerala’, named ‘Jaivakeralam’ (organic Kerala) seven years ago. With the urban middle class of 150 to 200 million people, India is offering an enormous number of potential buyers and the
environmental, health and social effects are increasing the awareness for the importance of food and quality of nutrition.

Facts, figures and forecasts on the Indian Organic market.
New venue
With the fourth largest buying power worldwide – India is preparing to overtake. By 2012 the market is expected to grow six to seven times faster than previously and is to reach the billion-mark, according to the ambitious planning by the National Centre for Organic Farming (NCOF). The quantity of organic products in India has the demand to grow and the variety of exported goods will enrich the market. Even now 90 organic products in 15 different categories are exported. From 2009 to 2012 the total turnover with organic is estimated to expand by factor nine to reach 40 billion rupees. Export value nearly quintupled from 2003 to 2009 to 350 million rupees and according to ICCOA, International Competence Centre for Organic Agriculture it is estimated to grow by factor seven by the year 2012. Bangalore is India’s 3rd largest city and the capital of the state of Karnataka.
Its stunning development into India’s key centre for the IT and other hightech
industries has led to a young, highly-qualified middle class population being very open to modern and health conscious life-style and spending overproportionate on nutrition and personal care products. Bangalore offers excellent air-connections both to international and all major domestic cities, most of them served several times a day.

We were very glad to welcome 103 companies from 13 countries in Mumbai in 2010. With a huge variety of products from spices, fruits, vegetables, fabrics to natural personal care and organic textiles, 2,860 trade visitors were attracted to attend BioFach India together with India Organic. Of these exhibitors as well as visitors, a good number were also actively the delegates at the International Seminar that boosted knowledge, new learnings and
exchange by sharing exclusive information from top organic players and experts. Seminars about how to reach the Indian costumers called attention to the national and international audience, but also topics like the “US Organic Market Update“ and “The development of better practises of organic farming“ were attracting the overall attention.
