I am working on a dairy farm (100 HF cows) business plan. In this regard I have browsed through innumerable web sites on the net and gathered a quite a bit of information about the dairy business. However, there are some missing gaps which I need to fill, which are as follows:
1. Milk yield pattern : lactation period of a HF-cow as understood is around 300 days with a total milk yield of 6000 - 7500 ltrs, which averages 20-25 ltrs per day. But practically the yield pattern per day may not be uniform over the lactation period. Logically, it will be high in the initial months and there onwards will be on a reducing trend as it approaches the end of the lactation. In order to suitably organize uniform production and marketing, this info is very much needed. Can anyone please give the yield trend, with a 5 day average over one lactation period?
2. Ratio of Milking to dry animals: the ratio, as understood from various sources, to maintain uniform milk production, says 70:30, (with lowest of 65:35). What should be the ideal ratio and is it practically achievable?
3. Calf mortality, proportion and first lactation: Average calf mortality rate, average rate of male to female births and the time duration from birth to first lactation.
Thanks in advance.
With best regards.
Ravindra

Dear Ravindra,

Nice to see that you are keen to know the key figures in the operation of a dairy farm, successfully / profitably.

Is it just a project work or are you seriously looking at investing and entering into this business?

In this regard, you may like to have a look at the thread "Zero Budget Dairy Farming" in this website.

Dear Ravindra,

Find Facts as given below,

1. Lactation Period - This is taken as 300 days , it simply means when we refer to lactation yield we take into account only the milk produced in first 300 days after calving. The cow may be in milk after 300 days but that mik will not be recorded for computation of lactation yield.
2. Lactation yield:- 7000 lits per lactation means that the peak yield of the cow must be around 35 kgs. For Indian conditions any lactation yield over 4000 kgs is exceptionally good in initial years of a dairy farm.
3. Milk pattern During Lactation :- Other things remaining constant, The milk yield declines by 8-10% every month after 60 days of calving. The milk yield may show fluctuations during stress conditions , diseases, metabolic disorders or when the animal is in heat.
4. Ideal ratio for Dry/Lactating :- There is no such ratio. It should depend on your annual business plan. There is no impact of any such ratio on the returns of a dairy farm.
The only thing which is to be taken care of is that atleast 80% of total livestock should calve every year. For e.g. few dairy farms like MODEL DAIRY FARM plan that most of the cows should calve between october and december every year. Others may plan that the pattern should be such that the milk flow is maintained round the year. In nut shell it would depend on your business plan.
5. Maintaining milk flow :- consistancy is not possible but fluctuations can be minimised by adapting a controlled breeding policy.

Thanks and regards,

Regarding calf mortality, it depends on your managerial efficiency. There are dairy farms where calf mortality rate is less than 10%, and there are farms where calf mortality is 100%.
The sex ratio as per probability is 50%. By the judicious usage of SEX FIXERS a dairy farm can have up to 90% females.
Average time duration for HF, CROSS BREED and JERSEY from birth to first calving is 30 months.
