News on the global organic market:
1. BioFach America 2011: Trade show almost booked up
Back to the roots: BioFach America returns to Baltimore. The organic and natural products sector meets on the East Coast of America from 22–24 September. The trade show also receives a new name in 2011 and becomes BioFach America – All Things Organic. The event takes place as part of the Natural Products Expo East in the Baltimore Convention and Exhibition Center. Some 20,000 trade visitors are expected again at both events and can use the three days to make new contacts and expand their networks. The conference that starts the day before covers current trends and the latest market analyses. The exhibitors not only focus on food and drinks: The rapidly developing non-food market, especially for natural personal care, demands increasing attention from retailers and these product ranges must be maintained with the customer in mind.

2. Sustainability Conference SusCon postponed to 2012
The organisers of the leading international conference on sustainability have not received enough positive signals in 2011. “There are a lot of important national and international conferences on sustainability within a narrow time frame,” says Bernward Geier, one of the organisers of SusCon. “The move of the annual conference of the German Council for Sustainable Development (RNE) from autumn this year to June as well as a multitude of other events concerning sustainability meant that potential participants are spoilt for choice. Due to these time conflicts we have not been able to match the high quantitative and qualitative standard the conference achieved in the last two years. We have therefore decided – with mixed feelings – to postpone SusCon 2011 to 2012. Our numerous partners have not only expressed sympathy, but also their full support for the conference in 2012.”

3. Fairtrade in Germany up 27 % in 2010
The value of products sold with the Fairtrade label reached some 340 million EUR last year, which equates to 27 % growth. Fairtrade products are offered in Germany by more than 180 licensees in over 30,000 supermarkets, organic food stores and World Shops and by some 18,000 catering institutions. One of the most popular Fairtrade products is coffee, and sales of the brown beans grew by about 26 % in 2010 to over 7,200 t. The strongest growth of 49 % was in the out-of-home market. The demand for fruit juices rose by 18 % to almost 7 million litres, and 2.6 million individual items of textiles were sold – 29 % more.
Fairtrade roses were also popular in the shops, with sales up 10 % on 2009. The good 72 million stems sold achieved a market share of some 2.4 %.

4. EU Agriculture Commissioner opposes green genetic engineering
Genetically-modified crop production does not meet the requirements for quality food, diverse diets and natural biodiversity, EU farm minister Dacian Ciolos has said, reports the magazine Farmers Weekly Interactive. In an interview with the Romanian newspaper Adeverul, Mr Ciolos said GM crops were not the panacea for meeting increasing food demands across Europe. He said EU agriculture should not be based on producing cheap foods at whatever cost and consumer demand for quality produce would not be met by GM technology. Stating that he strongly favoured traditional agriculture, the commissioner said GM produce risked damaging consumer trust in food produced in the EU.

5. Harmonizing the organic food markets in South East Asia
The Philippines looks forward to greater market access to Asia for its organic produce through a harmonization of standards that will remove trade barriers in the region.
Through the Global Organic Market Access (GOMA) project of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UN-FAO), Asian countries are now drafting the standards. Also leading the drafting of the regional organic standards are the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) and the UN Conference on Trade and Development.

6. India: Tiny sugar factory concept
As many as 800 organic farmer couples (1,600 farmers) from the state will now get to visit Cuba to learn about that country's achievements in organic farming. The Karnataka State Organic Farming Mission has organised the trip. The mission wants the farmers to particularly study organic sugar cane cultivation in Cuba. “Unlike India, small groups of 300 to 400 organic sugar cane farmers themselves have set up and manage cooperative sugar factories in Cuba. These small factories are operating well. We are considering emulating such an example in Karnataka and will try to help the visiting farmers to set up similar small cooperative sugar mills,” he said.

7. New name for Organic Exchange textile organization
The Organic Exchange organization, which has operated as an information platform for organic textiles for years, has been renamed the Textile Exchange. The group headquartered in the USA maintains offices in eight countries, organizes conferences and also publishes an annual report. The “Textile Exchange 2010 Farm & Fiber Report” presents the continuing growth in the organic cotton segment in 2009/2010. Production rose 15 % from 209,950 metric tonnes (mt) in 2008-09 to 241,697 mt. The 100-page report covers 23 countries, 260 producer groups and 275,300 farmers. An overview of the coming events can be seen on the Internet.

8. Development cooperation with perfume raw materials
Dominikus Collenberg has set up a unique project in Zimbabwe. Despite the extremely unfavourable circumstances in this African country, the German agricultural engineer and organic farmers succeeded in setting up the organic production of spices, herbs and aromatic plants for customers such as the perfume industry in Europe and the USA in only a few years. He now employs over 1,000 small farmers. “The contract also includes growing organic corn, millet, wheat or soya beans so they can provide their own food,” as the Spiegel magazine reports in issue 18/2011 on KAITE, the name of the initiative. Collenberg provides the local farmers with the seed and organizes training on organic agriculture.

9. Studies on pesticides and retarded development in children
Three independent studies just published found that children whose mothers are exposed to common agricultural pesticides are more likely to experience a range of deleterious effects in their cognitive development, including lower IQ, as well as impaired reasoning and memory. Organic agriculture prohibits the use of these pesticides, and all other toxic and persistent chemicals.
