Dioscorea bulbifera (Air Potato), the unassuming bulbils that grow on vines from a tuber/rhizome without care can be the wonder food and medicine of the future which has reached near extinction in many parts of India where it was abundant nearly four decades ago. Along with trees lost, these vines that naturally climb on trees and bear the bulbils on the vines, also lost their habitat. As there was no incentive for its cultivation and people lacked knowledge about this unassuming plant species resulted in careless attitude toward it that ultimately pushed it into near extinction in many area of India already.
Scientific studies in the recent past revealed that D. bulbifera is a real wonder food and medicine with ability to prevent cancer, diabetes, goiter, leprosy and so many other diseases. One variant of this species referred by Adivasi people of Kerala as "Nooran Kizhangu" indicates the fact that it can assure healthy life for 100 years (Nooraan means the one that goes to hundred). In Sanskrit, it is referred as "Maha Oushada"- the great medicine and "Vishvakshemapriya"-that assures world welfare, indicating good health to all beings.
