Hybrid Seeds
Hybrid seeds are being adopted rapidly across the country for their greater productivity, extended availability, better adaptability and selective capability. Explaining the features of hybrid seeds, Mr. Nataraj says, “Hybrid seed is a progeny of two dissimilar parents. Hybrids are bred for the purpose of increasing the yields and two incorporate needed characters like tolerance to pest and diseases etc.”

Further speaking about the advantages of using hybrid plants, he says, “If you just see the history, there were times when farmers used to get very low yields in spite of all other efforts but due to adopting high yielding crop hybrid seeds, the national average of yields are growing in an incomparable way. Hybrids are tolerant to specific pests and disease and give higher yields compared to local varieties. Regular seeds yield potentiality is less and they are localized to specific parts of agro climatic zones. Green Revolution is the major cause for the process of hybridization.”
