The machinery developed at the institute is put in exhibition for the information of farmers and manufacturers around the country. Till those are commercialized, we fabricate their prototypes and  make them available to interested farmers and manufacturers,” says Dr. Kulkarni.

soybeansCentral Institute of Agricultural Engineering (CIAE) was established in 1976 during the Fifth Five Year Plan to address research issues related to agricultural engineering. CIAE was set up to facilitate crop production with engineering interventions in agriculture to make it less time consuming, drudgery reducing, cost effective activity with ensured timeliness in performing farm operations.  “Further, it also covered optimal use of energy, enhancement in farm income through primary processing activity and proper use of combination animate – machine and human power in agriculture to make it cost effective and more remunerative,” avers Dr. S D Kulkarni, director. The institute is headquartered in Bhopal, MP.

Initially, research and developed work related to farm machinery, post harvest technology and energy in agriculture, were taken up. Keeping with functional utility, the divisions at the institute were reorganized and two additional divisions namely Agro Industrial Extension and Instrumentation were created during the seventh Fifth Five Year Plan. The Divisions were further reorganized and an additional division of Irrigation and Drainage Engineering was created. CSIR come under ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research), New Delhi.

Research and Development
The institute mainly conducts research and development work in the areas of farm power and machinery, irrigation and drainage engineering including soil and water conservation, energy in agriculture including renewable energy sources, agro processing of crops including soybean for income generation, food and nutrition security and employment generation.
