PG diploma in herbal medical informatcis
The distance learning course, PG Diploma in Herbal Medical Informatics was started in2004 and there are 60 enrollments for the course. The course covers the following concepts:
• To define the term “medicinal herb”according to both horticultural informatics and naturopathic meanings.• Identify modern trends in the use of herbs in medicines in our country.
• To visualize the role of home remedies and naturopath in modern society.
• To explain the characteristics of different types of chemicals found in medicinal herbs.

• To identify different herbal medicines, which are safe and appropriate for an unskilled person to make, administer and use at home.Speaking about the course, Dr. (Mrs.) KumudSarin, head of department of bioinformatics and biotechnology and director of program says, “The objectives of the programme are to discuss and analyze the main issues and difficulties and share different experiences in the evaluation of herbal medicines; facilitate the establishment of national guidelines and regulations for the use of herbal medicines; and promote high quality research in traditional medicine.” Adding, “We provide training during which the candidate has to conduct research and submit a project report. Research is carried out at various levels.”

Eligibility :
The eligibility criterion for the course is that the applicant should be from any of the following streams: science graduates, agriculture graduates, B.Pharma,B.A.M.S., B.H.M.S., M.B.B.S., and other related science graduates with computers. “It is distance-learning program so anyone can join it but it is very beneficial for the students of medicine, herbal medicine, and ayurvedic, homeopathic etc,” says Dr. Sarin.

Applicability :
According to Dr. Sarin, the course curriculum includes various subjects that have a significant role to play in today’s medical age. The course deals with identifying modern trends in the use of herbal medicine in the country along with visualizing the role of home remedies in a modern set up. It also helps in identifying different herbal medicines whose preparation and usage is safe and does not cause adverse reactions for human consumption if administered incorrectly. The course curriculum includes various subjects that have a significant role to play in today’s medical age.

It would enable the students to identify the therapeutic properties of the major herbs used to treat gastrointestinal, respiratory and immune system related disorders. It would also help them assess, advice and prescribe appropriate herbal treatment for the above disorders. Alongside it would also enhance their knowledge of the therapeutic properties of the major herbs used to treat the disorders of the urinary, male reproductive and female reproductive systems. It would also be beneficial in identifying the therapeutic properties of the major herbs used to treat endocrine and metabolic disorders.

It also helps describe and apply herbal manufacturing techniques for liquid preparations, solid preparations and semisolid preparations for internal and external use. It would also help evaluate and apply findings associated with pharmacology, including both pharmaco dynamics and pharmacokinetics, of herbal medicines, with a particular focus on key and representative groups of chemical constituents including flavones, phyto-oestrogens, polyphenolics and saponins.

Career Prospects
The institute has a separate placement cell.According to Dr. Sarin, successful completion of the course would enable the student to have the following skill set:
• Distinguish between medicinal herbs in cultivation including twenty-five different genera and fifty different varieties.
• History of medicinal herb usage.
• Compare the chemical components of different medicinal herbs in terms of their general effect on the human body.
• Prepare simple and safe herbal remedies in a domestic situation.
• Explain the potential dangers involved in dealing with plants.
• Prepare a schedule of cultural practices for a medicinal herb crop.
• Develop a production plan for a medicinal herb crop.

Dr. Sarin has served as a lecturer in Delhi University for a decade, presented papers and done research work along with writing and editing a number of books. By qualification Dr. Sarin has done B. Sc.(Hons)., M.Sc., Ph.D from Delhi University Delhi.
