Plastro Plasson Industries (India) Ltd. is an Indo Israel joint venture company, established in 1992. It is an ISO 9001:2000 company. The company specializes in micro irrigation. PPIL offers a wide range of products and solutions in the field of precise irrigation and intensive agriculture cultivation. The solutions include drip and micro irrigation systems and turnkey projects for all agriculture sectors such as row crops, horticulture, green houses, plantations, orchards, nurseries and more. The manufacturing unit is situated at Urse, 35 kilometers from Pune on about 20 acres of land.
“We are in the business of PVC pipes manufacturing, which are used for irrigation by the farmers. In order to provide better service to the farmer and the nation by way of saving of valuable input like water and obtain high returns, and we entered into collaboration with the Israel company Plastro & Plasson in 1992, who are the pioneers in micro irrigation technology for agriculture,” says Dr. Narendra Rane, vice president marketing.
The company’s business partners are Finolex Group of Companies – manufacturers of PVC pipes, PVC resin, electrical cables, optic fibre, PVC sheets, information technology; Plastro, Israel – pioneers in micro irrigation technology; Plasson Ltd., Israel – pioneers in manufacturers of agricultural and electrofusion fittings ( PVC/PP), poultry products, etc. “Presently we have joint venture between Finolex Group of Companies and Plasson Ltd, Israel and the name of company is Finolex Plasson Industries Ltd.,” avers Dr. Rane.
The range of products offered by the company are integrated drip lines, laterals, online drippers, PC & PCND drip lines, micro sprinklers, foggers, misters, filters, automation equipments, fittings, PVC pipes, greenhouse structures, water storage tanks, water soluble fertilizers, growth promoters, etc.
PPIL’s services include survey, planning and design facilities for drip, mini and micro sprinklers, foggers, misters, fertigation equipments, etc. for various field crops, horticulture crops, plantations, landscape, greenhouse and poly-house irrigation systems.
Advantages of Micro Irrigation
The various advantages of micro irrigation are the following:
* Saving of 50 to 60% in irrigation water compared to flood irrigation * Increase in yield by more than 20% * Higher quality with longer shelf life * Saving in labor cost and electricity
* Prevention of land degradation * 30 to 40% saving in fertilizer consumption * Minimum attack of insects, pests and diseases * Micro irrigation is ideal for all types of land
Advantages of Water Soluble Fertilizers
Speaking about the advantages of water soluble fertilizers, Mr. Rane says, “They can be applied as per the need of the growing plant at the root zone directly. There are no losses due to leaching. They help to maintain uniform application of fertilizer nutrients, improve availability of plant nutrients and their uptake, frequent application is possible, quick and convenient to use, save Fertilizers (30-40%) & Increase yields (up to 25%), and reduces soil compaction.”
The company also offers knowledge transfer programs. “We offer irrigation solutions, agronomic guidance by way of field visits, farmers meetings, on farm training. Farmers and high value crop growers / corporate are the beneficiaries of these programs.”
Types of Sprinklers Manufactured
The company manufactures different types of sprinklers. It has micro sprinklers ranging from 40 liters per hour discharge to 300 lph, wetting radius upto 5 meters, used for vegetables, nurseries, propagation. It manufacture midi sprinklers from 135 lph to 375 lph wetting radius up to 7.5 meters used for vegetables, pulses, oil seeds, etc., and medium sprinklers from 400 to 800 lph wetting radius up to 8 meters, for pulses, and oil seeds, vegetables, etc.
The company does not manufacture any landscape products but has marketing tie up with Rainbird, USA, for the products. “We have installed these products at Reliance, Mumbai, Sahara, Lonavala, Bombay Presidency Golf Course and Visakhapatnam Airport beside others,” avers Dr. Rane.
Further explaining the function of other products, he says, “Foggers and misters are used for controlling temperature in greenhouses / shade houses. Jet sprayers are used to irrigate horticultural crops like oil palms, coconut, cardamom, apple, etc.”
When asked about the market potential for agricultural implements, Dr. Rane says, “Total market potential for micro irrigation is 49.5 million hectares. The area covered so far is less than 1.5 million hectares.”
Quality of Products
Speaking about the product speciality, Dr. Rane says, “Our products are known for accurate and desired performance compared to similar ones available in the market at cheaper rates. “In the market we are known for the quality product, company and the educated customer definitely prefer our products.” The company has an R&D lab of its own wherein different products / raw materials are tested. He says, “We have full fledged online quality checks at different stages of production and also performance evaluation during field trials. We also have sophisticated quality control lab.”
Adding, “Based on the market feedback also there is always improvement made in the products,” says Dr. Rane. In terms of recognition and awards, the company’s chairman Mr. P.P. Chhabria has been awarded a Certificate of Honor by the Prime Minister of Israel in recognition and appreciation for contribution to Israel’s economic development and growth through continuous business cooperation with Israeli companies over many years.
There are around 450 people working in the organization. PPIL clocks an annual turnover of around Rs.120 crores. The company exports its products to Middle East. Dr. Rane is an M.Sc (Agri), Ph.D. in soil science / agronomy. He has more than 25 years experience in agri input sector.
Speaking about assistance from the government, Dr. Rane says, “Micro irrigation industry does not get support from the government however support by way of subsidy is given to the farmers directly for purchase of MIS. Government should continue the support and increase the assistance to the farmers and make it compulsory for all to use irrigation water through micro irrigation system only.”
