DETAILS OF RESEARCH WORK The present investigation of my research work deals with the study of soil mycoflora of Morus alba L. from Karnataka. Soil represents a medium or substrate in which numerous microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, Actinomycetes, protozoa and various other microfauna living and bring about a great variety of processes which are responsible for continuation of the cycle of life in nature. The role of fungi in the soil is an extremely complex and is fundamental to the soil ecosystem. There is little information available about the soil mycoflora of mulberry. Keeping these commonly in the mind it initiated to undertake the present survey. Totally ten areas have been studied for nearly three years regarding taxonomical, ecological and physiological aspects of the isolated mycoflora during the period of 2001-2003. The study includes the comparative account of percentage frequency of soil mycoflora with a view of finding out population variation in different regions i.e., rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere in relation to seasons and layers of the soil. During the estimation of fungal percentage frequency, it was observed that rhizosphere soil possessed higher fungal frequency as compared to non-rhizosphere. The soil samples were collected from the selected localities of Morus alba L. in the seasons namely rainy, winter and summer from both rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere region. Two methods namely Soil Plate Method and Soil Dilution Method were used for the isolation in the present work. Totally 150 fungal species belonging to 53 genera were isolated from rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere of Morus alba L. Nineteen species of 7 different genera were isolated from Zygomycotina; ten species that belongs to five genera were isolated from Ascomycotina and the remaining 121 species from 41 genera were isolated from Mitosporic fungi.The dominant genera in terms of the number of species were Aspergillus (17 species), Penicillium (16 species), Alternaria (10 species), Cladosporium (8 species), Curvularia (8 species) and Rhizopus (8 species). Besides these 150 species there are many unidentified species.There was difference in the fungal population by the different media used. Malt extract agar media found to be suitable for screening process. Quite large number of species was able to isolate since there was use of other media also. A very few reports on soil mycoflora of Morus alba L., have been reported from this part of the country. In the present work extensive collections of the species of three groups viz., Zygomycotina, Ascomycotina and Mitosporic fungi were made.In case of Physiological studies the growth on different cultural media, pH, utilization of Carbon and Nitrogen nutrients were undertaken. Following organisms viz; Alternaria tenuis, Cunninghamella elegans, Curvularia lunata, Fusarium oxysporum, Penicillium chrysogenum and Trichoderma glaucum were used for the above parameters of Physiological studies.
