Star anise,the pericarp of Illicium verum ,a small tree is used as spice in Indian food.There is heavy demand for Star anise essential oil.Star anise seed is the industrial source of Shikimic acid, the primary feedstock used to create the anti-flu drug Tamiflu(Oseltamivir).
China almost entirely supplies Star anise seeds to the world.India has very much potential to grow Star anise on a big scale since it is already grown in Arunachal Pradesh on a limited scale.
Star anise is a topical tree.The star shaped fruits are harvested just before ripening.The plant prefers light (sandy) and medium (loamy) soils and requires well-drained soil. The plant prefers acid and neutral soils. It can grow in semi-shade or no shade. It requires moist soil.This species is not very cold-hardy.It grows in hot, swampy areas.It can be propagated by seeds,by air layering or by wood cutting.
