Dear Kirti,

Appreciate your response. Actually the poster is asking about the cost of green house construction.

Based on my enquiry, the lowest cost of green house construction is around 500/m2 for basic type with no climate controls in India.

So an acre of green house structure alone will cost 20 lakhs (1 acre == 4046 sq m, cost = 4046 * 500 ~ 20 lakhs)..

In US, a farmer is able to construct at 30 Rs/ m2. So the total cost for 1 acre green house structure is around 1,25,000 Rs.

See the vast difference in the cost... Cost of labor in US is considerably higher than in India and hence the cost should be less in India.

1 acre basic greenhosue costs 20 lakhs in India where as it costs 1, 25000 (1 lakh, 25 thousand, after conversion) in US.

Can someone explain this????

Btw, the below figures indicate cost of cultivation, yields etc and not the basic infrastructure cost of erecting a greenhouse.

Thanks

An economic analysis of gerbera cultivation in a low-cost ventilated polyhouse (NVPH) or a polyhouse with fan and pad cooling system (FPPH) was conducted in 1998/99. The total cost of cultivation was higher for FPPH (117 224 rupees) than for NVPH (66 329). NVPH resulted in higher total flower yield (103 flowers/m2) and yield of grade A flowers (89%) than FPPH (94 flowers/m2 and 62%, respectively). The higher yield observed in NVPH was attributed to greater survival of plants from diseases (95% versus 79% in FPPH). A net return of 136.5 rupees/m2 was recorded for NVPH, whereas a net loss of 160.02 rupees/m2 was recorded for FPPH, mainly due to higher investment cost without any additional benefit. Thus, NVPH was more appropriate for gerbera cultivation under Bangalore (Karnataka, India) conditions.

Dear Sir

Actually in India there are considerable climatic changes, whereas US has a cooler climate and does need too much cost to be incurred in green house. so to maintain the needed temperature and humidity, pest etc the construction cost also increases as many modification in green house structure also vary accordingly.

Once you include the component of climate controls (electronic gadgets), it varies..

But for basic greenhouse with no climate controls, the costs are too high in India.. Take the case of Bangalore where you really don't need any temperature, humidity controls with in green house for most part. Even in that area, its around 500/m2.

I think somehow this topic is off the track again.

Let me ask pundits here... How much does it cost to build a greenhouse with plastic cover, Bamboo poles or MS pipes (whatever cheaper in India) for erection etc. No electronic components. Will that be still 500/m2?

Thanks
