Question Jatropha Cultivation

Please I'll need some information.
Iam contemplating to undertake the plantation of Jatropha for commercial purpose with intercropping on about a 50 ha of land i would please like to know how many of suitable seed crops it will need. Is it necessary to plough the land before planting or does it first require making a nursery followed by transplantation?

Dear Sir

* Plant at 2x2 m in 60x60x60 cm pit filled with soil mixed with 2 kg organic manure.
* Drip irrigate, if possible; monsoon, little; winter, fortnightly; summer, frequently.
* Prune main stem upon 1.5 m growth for profuse branching and higher seed yield.
* Spray foliage with growth promoters for higher yield of seeds and oil.
* Ensure maximum exposure to sunlight for enhancing seed yield.
* Use inter-cropping for first 2-3 years for income while Jatropha plants mature.

Cultivation timings of Jatropha
Nursery raising time:Feb- March, Sep- October
Trasplanting of saplings:February - April , In monsoon months
Direct seeding sowing:After good rainfall
Direct planting by cuttings:Two month before monsoon
Manuring time:On trasplantation and after one year
Pruning time:March-May
Flowering time:May - September,
Fruiting time:July- November
Harvesting time:August- December (North India)

Dear Sir,
Thanks for the precious information on the Jatropha cultivation.
Which high income yield crops ( especially in international market ) could be recommended for inter-cropping during the 2/3years maturity time? Regards

Post jatropha cultivation

Sir, I'm very grateful for your receptiveness. I presume these crops can make it in sub-saharan Nigeria where the project is to take place. Regards

Default jatropha cultivation

Dear Sir,

Utmost caution is required when you select jatropha variety. You will not be able to sell the produce if the selected plants bear seeds with low oil content. Plant only varieties with high oil content.

The price offered by the companies at present is not sufficient to cover the cultivation expenses and in particular the cost of plucking and drying the seeds. It is very labour intensive.

Treat Jatropha as secondary/boundary or intercrop only.

Regards,

Vishnusankar

Post Jatropha Cultivation

Dear Sir, Thanks for your warning. I've really got some offers but
as you cautioned it is necessary on my part to be able to identify the high oil content seeds. This means getting the right supplier or does it require solliciting the help of an expert?
Regards.

Several crops can be intercrpped with jatropha. However, the selection of crops will depend upon the location of (agroclimatic zone),spil and the level of maintenance at your disposal.Indian basil(Ocimum basilicum),Sarpgandha, satavari, senna, patchouli and even aswagandha can be the crops.

Hi,
I'm presently staying in NOIDA but I want to start mushroom cultivation in my village in Bihar. I also want to start jatropa cultivation on inter-cropping basis.

Can you please provide me the details of departments or institutes in Noida or in Delhi from where I can get the complete details regarding the cultivation.

Please let me know the informations ASAP.

Thanks and regards,
Sanjay Ram
