1. First organic dairy products factory in Lebanon

Biomass Organic Products has launched the first organic dairy products
factory in Lebanon to produce a variety of local and EU-certified
organic dairy products that will be offered to consumers across Lebanon
starting July 2011, reports the Middle East business portal AME Info.
The factory, located in Qab Elias in Lebanon's Bekaa area and launched
under the patronage of the Lebanese Agriculture Minister Dr. Hussein El
Hajj Hassan, is the first in the Middle East to produce a wide variety
of EU-certified organic dairy products including yoghurt and cheeses.
The new organic dairy product line comes as the latest addition to a
wide variety of Biomass organic fruits, vegetables, eggs, herbs and
fruit-based beverages already available and increasingly popular in
Lebanon. All organic products from Biomass are certified by the Italian
certification body IMC and conform to the European Regulation for
Organic Farming.

2. EU: Growing GM crops can be restricted at state level

A current resolution by the European Parliament grants Member States the
possibility of legally restricting or banning the growing of genetically
modified plants on their own territory. “This decision by parliament has
distinctly improved the EU Commission’s incomplete proposal for national
bans on growing genetically modified plants. This at last gives Member
States legal security,” says a delighted Felix Prinz zu Löwenstein,
President of the Federation of the Organic Food Industry (BÖLW). For
banning or restricting the growing of GM plants on their own territory,
the EU states are to be allowed to quote environmental risks or
socio-economic consequences as arguments in future. The IFOAM EU Group
also welcomed the decision in a statement.

3. Good market growth in Canada

The Canadian organic market has grown from $2 billion in 2008 to over
$2.6 billion in 2010, according to the Canada Organic Trade Association
(COTA). Canadian companies annually export over $390 million worth of
organic commodities, ingredients and products to the U.S., EU and other
parts of the world. Since 2008, COTA has coordinated a Long-Term
International Strategy for the organic sector, with roughly $500,000 in
cumulative matching funds contributed through Agriculture and Agri-Food
Canada’s AgriMarketing Program to support Canadian companies branding
and marketing their organic products around the world.

4. Spice manufacturer includes organic products

Fuchs North America, a leading producer and supplier of seasonings,
spices and flavour systems to the food processing industry, has
announced that it is expanding its product offerings by obtaining
organic certification for its processing facility in Baltimore, MD. With
this certification, Fuchs North America can now offer its food
processing clients certified organic seasonings. The certification was
made by the Maryland Organic Certification Program (MOCP).
Since 1990, Fuchs North America has been part of the Fuchs Group, with
production and processing on four continents. The Fuchs Group is a
multinational company supplying seasonings, spices and spice oils,
capsicums, flavorings/extracts and functional ingredients to food
processors, food service firms and the retail trade.

5. USA: Does GM grass endanger organic farms?

A special variety of grass developed by Scotts Miracle-Gro Company has
been engineered to be resistant to the herbicide glyphosate, commonly
sold as Roundup, reports the eNews Park Forest in Illinois. Kentucky
bluegrass is a popular choice for yards and fields as well as pastures
and prairies, and the GE seed is expected to be made available for
consumers to plant in their home lawns, potentially making it one of the
most widely planted GE crops in the country. This will make conversion
of new land to organic food production more difficult as, according to
APHIS’s fact sheet on the decision: “Once established, GE Kentucky
bluegrass may prevent transition to organic status unless eradicated
from the acreage to be transitioned.” APHIS is the Animal and Plant
Health Inspection Service of the USA.
