The Scottish Executive published its third Organic Annual Report which revealed a progress towards the action plan for organic farming. The action plan had been launched three years earlier and had set out the Executive's vision for organic farming and the food sector to ensure that local demand for organic produce can be met, as far as possible, by Scottish producers.
Doubling the area of organic land in Scotland from 15 % to 30 % by 2007 was achieved. Scottish farmers were able to meet about 70 % of the demand. Many Scottish producers were also able to develop their sales into the UK and into other markets.
There has been a huge increase in sales of organic produce. It is one of the company’s fastest-growing areas, according to a spokesman of Asda. The retailer now has more than 900 organic lines and claims to be the retailer with the strongest growth in organic sales with 23 % every year, while the retail market in general is averaging around 17 %. Asda is in the process of re-launching its organic private label range at the moment.
