What is the Benefit of Organic Farming?

You've probably heard a great deal about organic gardening and farming. You may be wondering if it's all hype or if there are real advantages to this type of agriculture. If you are asking yourself, what is the benefit of organic farming, keep reading. We will explore the various benefits of gardening organically. Organic farming and gardening means no hormones, steroids, chemical pesticides or unnatural fertilizers are used. You can raise organic livestock and grow organic plants. The first benefit to consider is safety. Organic farming is safer than non-organic farming.

The reason organic farming is safer than non-organic farming is because you are not working with toxic chemicals. In addition, toxic chemicals do not taint your produce or livestock, therefore this type of agriculture is safer for the consumer as well. Did you know that cattle treated with hormones and steroids have traces of these components in their tissue, which ends up on someone's dinner table? Not only that, but fruits and vegetables treated with dangerous pesticides retain the pesticides at the market. Non-organic raisins, for example, were once likened to pesticide pellets by actress and organic living advocate Kelly Preston.

In addition to safety, cost is another benefit. Because you are using natural materials, you will not be paying big bucks for laboratory created synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. One fantastic type of fertilizer is animal manure. The manure from livestock is dried and made into a nutrient rich soil additive that is 100% natural and very cheap. Another extremely cost-effective form of fertilizer is compost, which is made from decayed plant material. In addition to cost-effective growing, you may find more consumers are willing to buy organic, which can add to your profit.

A question like what is the benefit or organic farming can best be answered with another question. What are the drawbacks of organic farming? For many, the drawbacks are none. Organic farming is safe, healthy, natural and popular these days. All you need to do is browse the shelves of your supermarket to find a wealth of organic products. There are even entire stores, like the wildly popular Whole Foods Market, that sell nothing but organic products. Everything is going organic these days. Meat, milk, eggs, produce, even cotton. Living an organic lifestyle is simply healthier and more desirable, and the public is starting to realize this.
