Two species of tulsi are cultivated on large sacle in India.One is Indian basil (Ocimum basilicum) and another is scared basil/pusa basil (Ocimum sanctum). First one is cultivated for oil and 250 tones oil is produced annually in north India is consumed in flavour and fragrance industires in India and abroad. The oil is also converted in to anethol which is constituen of fennel/saunf oil. Indian basil is a short duration crop and can be cultivated in wide range of soil and climatic conditions as shrt duration crop (75-80days) with an average yield of 40-50kg oil/acre worth Rs.15000-20000/-. Pusa basil is mainly cultivated for dry leaves which is conttuent of herbal medicine and teas. One should take up pusa bail cultivation after locating proper market.Here quality of leave is important and quick disposal of produce is required otherwise it gets deterirated.
