Costus pictus D. Don commonly called 'insulin plant' or 'spiral ginger' belonging to the family of Zingiberaceae, is a plant whose leaves have been shown to have a hypoglycemic effect when consumed. Insulin leaves helps to control the blood sugar level and you can use it as preventive measure to those who are members of Diabetic family in general.
Insulin plant has large fleshy looking leaves. The undersides of these large, smooth, dark green leaves have light purple shade stems. The leaves are spirally arranged around the stem, forming attractive, arching clumps arising from underground root stocks. This plant reaches a height of a maximum of two feet. Apparently this plant also bears yellow/orange flowers like all gingers. The flower petals are edible; supposed to taste quite sweet and are nutritious. The leaves tastes nice with fresh lemony sourness to it.
