Liquorice-a remunerative medicinal crop

Liquorice is imported (5000-10000 tonnes) from Iran,Afganistan,Iraq to India every year.So if any person is cultivating this crop,he will surely get benifit.
It is botanically known as Glcyrrhiza Glabra belong to family Papilionaceae.It is hardy perennial herb or undershrub.In hindi it is known as mulethi.It is extensively used in pharmaceutical industries.

Trial have shown that it can be cultivated in Baramulla,Srinagar,Jammu,Dehradun,Delhi,Anand,Indo re and Bangalore.

Soil-it grows well on loamy soil of light texture having pH of 6-8.2.

Climate-warm and dry subtropical climate is suitable for it.Winter should be well defined.

Propagation-Root cuttings of 10-15 cm length are used.They are kept in moist sphagnum moss for about 8-10 days.When their buds start sprouting,then they are planted in the field in month of March -April.
30 x 30 cm spacing is good.

Fertilizers- 40 : 40 : 20 kg of NPK per hectare.It depends upon soil and climatic condition.

Pest-1)Termites-
CM-alderx @ 25 kg per ha during the last ploughing time.

Disease-1)Root rot-
CM- 5 kg brassicol as soil drenching.
2)Leaf spot-
CM-spray 0.4 % bavastin.

Harvesting-crop is ready for harvesting about 3-4 years of planting just before the plant have borne fruit.plants are lifted in novenber-december.

Procesing-15-20 cm long pieces of 1-2 cm diameter are made.Moisture should be 50%.

Yield-Root-5 t/ha
Trimmings-14-20 t/ha.

Dear Sir

can liquorice be cultivated in Hilly areas or water logged areas.

If grrnhouse is used can it give more benefits.
