Default cost of cultivation of stevia

Friends,

Here I m giving u the cost of cultivation of stevia for one hectare area.

A)Expenditure for the first year-
1.planting material-110000 x 5 = 550000 rs ( 5 rs per plant)
2.other expenditure=190000 rs
(land value,transportation,fertilizers,harvesting,drying ,weeding etc)
Total for first year=740000 rs

Expenditure from second year to fifth year=60000 x4=240000 rs

Total expenditure in 5 years=980000 rs

Gross income from first year to fifth year=800000 x 5=4000000 rs.
(here market rate of dry leaves is 80 rs/kg and yield is around 10 t/hac)

Net income in 5 years=3020000 rs
Net income /hectare/year=604000 rs

For more details about planting material suppliers, buyers, cultivation, location, please contact me.

Default Costs

Dried leaves have to be hand pounded ot make ti like Tea cut leaves which the market needs. The cost of laboput for this seems to be issing in your estimates. It is also not clear how many men/women labour you suggest and the price of the same makes a big difference in costs. Stevia is very sensytive to Termites, so the crop protection costs are missing in your analysis.

Based on last 9 years of stevia cultivation, we need at least 1.3 to 1.4 lakhs per year per acre for managing the crop, protecting from termites and having some preprosseing of the dried leaves. We pay 35 for women and 65 for men labour. At a conservative 3 lakhs per Ha, surely it is very difficult to cross 5 lakhs per annum as net profits.

Your costs seem very low and not practical.

Even the UAS recently suggested a costing of 80000-1 lakh/Acre under optimal conditions without any major problems. Refer to article in Tharanga Magazine or Contact Dr. AG Shanker UAS Bangalore on 23636713 for more info. This mean 2.5 lakhs per Ha per annum.

Default storage

We have leaves stored at 8-11% moisture in RT for more than 5 years. There is no change in Stevioside content. We have not analysed the other components of the leaf. Stevioside is highly stable to change in temperature and PH which are the major changes in storage. Literature has leaves over 50 years old with no change in stevioside contents in European collections.

Dear Sir,

Thanks for correcting me.I hope u will agree with below details.

Market cost of dried stevia leaves- rs 80/kg.
First harvest-9o days after planting-
Second harvest-90 days of first
Third harvest-90 days of second
Fourth harvest-90 days of third
Total 4 harvest in a year.In each harvest around 2.5 to 3.0 tonnes dried leaves are obtained.
Total yield in a year-10-12 t/hac.

Its true that I have not included plant protection cost as u mention above.

With consideration of that we can get around 4-5 lacs per annum.

Regards
Satya.

Market cost for dried leaves vary. We only supply processed tea cut leaf and not whole leaf.

We plant 9 inch long, 3 month old, vegetativly multiplied plants in the field. We get first cutting within 60 days after planting. Subsequent planting depends on hours of sunlight. In general we take 8-9 cuttings per year. With our care and maintainence we have be able to reach upto 60 tons per acre, with a plant density of 50000 plants per acre.

With the incomes you calim, and the costs as per UAS per Hectare, the net income is about 3.5 to 4 lacs.

The key is marketing and potential competationj from China.

We can provide 50 acres of land with good water, land , labour, and fertiliser to the crop. Any one interested for the cultivation in partnership can contact for the stevia production. Investment partners are also invited.
