water retention - mulch - jatropha plantation

My ref: IENG 373111, MIET 505330, registration with IET in GB.

Dear all,

I noted mulch made from shredded branches and twigs and spread on the soil around the base of the plant to retain water in the soil - prevent the soil from drying out to quickly by sunlight.

Question who is using a shredder and of what type and of what make? Eg: Is it electric power driven or driven by the shaft of the tractor to which it is fitted as an attachment?

Do u want to know the benefit of mulching or imlemnt needed to cut the leaves and branches.Mulching is effective in several ways.It prevents evaporation of water from surface of soil and as such consrve moisture for long time because evaporation losses are more than transpiration.Secondly in areas where temp. is high mulching maintains a favourable temp. regime.Thirdly it adds to organic matter after decomposition and thus nutrients.Fourthly much helps in weed control.For making pieces of twigs and leaves any type of implement availble will serve the purpose. Depending upon location it can be of different specification.The purpose is how efficiently job is accomplished.Even it can be designed by manufactures of agri.implements after knowing the requirement.

What apparatus do you use for mulching?
For example I used a small black and decker shredder which was electrically operated.
